Body:
Dallas, Texas, is a fantastic American city. You may have heard that “everything is bigger in Texas,” and this certainly holds true of Dallas. But please don’t mistake quantity as a substitute for quality. The bigness of Texas is certainly true of attractions in the Dallas area. Yet restaurants, sports teams and museums here all reach beyond Texas and are global in their appeal. Below you’ll find a few must-see Dallas institutions to take in on your next short-term visit to the city.
The Best Restaurants in Dallas, Texas
Neighborhood Services
Neighborhood Services is a bar and restaurant located on Lovers Lane (seriously) just a few miles north of downtown, off the Dallas North Tollway near the Dallas Love Field Airport. It’s roundly considered to be the best restaurant in the entire city. With a menu that ranges from delectably upscaled versions of standard American bar fare to dry-aged steaks and well-prepared coastal seafood, it’s not hard to see why. In fact, this place is so good that they now have a second location in nearby Addison. 5027 W. Lovers Lane.
Gemma
Located on North Henderson Avenue a quick drive from downtown Dallas, Gemma is owned and operated by a husband and wife who are Napa Valley ex-pats. The chef (the husband part of the team) cut his teeth by staying on at the Culinary Institute of America following graduation. Stephen Rogers worked as an apprentice in the CIA’s famed restaurant before heading to Napa Valley. His dedication to haute cuisine and classical technique shows through in Gemma’s California-inspired menu. 2323 N. Henderson Ave., #109.
Uchi
Uchi is a great example of what can be accomplished when a world of tradition encounters a creative mind. You’ll find a contemporary Japanese dining experience that features sushi alongside reimagined Japanese home cooking. And this being Texas, you’ll of course find meat on the tastings menu. Look for short ribs, pork belly and wagyu beef. Uchi never fails to stun, surprise, and tantalize. 2817 Maple Ave.
FT33
A great local expression of the ongoing nationwide farm-to-table movement, Dallas’s FT33 aspires to create more than just food. They want to deliver to patron’s palates an expression of the total of where their food comes from. The menu evolves constantly, depending upon the availability of fresh local ingredients of quality. They call it hyper-seasonality; patrons call it delicious.
Dallas Attractions
Dallas Museum of Art
The Dallas Museum of Art, which stands as an impressive and internationally acclaimed art museum, has been in existence since the turn of the 20th century, when it held its first exhibition at the public library in 1902. Admission was just a mere 25 cents, but local resident Mrs. C.E. Fargo insisted on paying a dollar, so the museum could display the first dollar it had ever earned. Admission is free these days, and museum lovers can view multiple artistic programs and exhibitions throughout the year.
Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza
The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is unlike any museum you’ve ever been to. It houses a permanent educational and historic exhibit that illuminates the life, accomplishments, assassination, and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. The museum uses a combination of photographs, artifacts, interpretive exhibits, and historic films to document Kennedy’s life and untimely death at a site overlooking where the president was shot and killed in 1963.
The Dallas World Aquarium
Housed in a converted 1924 warehouse building and the surrounding grounds and recently acquired adjacent buildings, the Dallas World Aquarium truly is a world-class destination for viewing both freshwater and saltwater organisms in simulations of their natural ecosystems. It is also a for-profit zoo and aquarium that helps with international conservation and local education by providing a home for many threatened and endangered species from around the world.
Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden
The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, like many other botanical gardens around the country, began its life as a private residence. In the years since it was donated to the city, it has come to encompass more than sixty-six acres of land, featuring thousands of plant species, views of the Dallas skyline, a myriad of fountains, and a concert venue.
Dallas Sports
The Big Four and One More
Dallas Cowboys
Love them or hate them, the Dallas Cowboys are a team that needs little to no introduction, whether you follow professional football or not. Affectionately known around the country as “America’s Team,” the Dallas Cowboys are one of the most winning football franchises in the history of the game. They’ve made it to the Super Bowl eight times, a record that only the Pittsburg Steelers can match, and have taken home Super Bowl rings five of those times: in 1971, 1977, 1992, 1993, and again in 1995.
Dallas Mavericks
When it comes to packing the stands with legions of cheering fans, the Dallas Mavericks are on a roll. As of this writing, their 477 game streak stands as the longest active sellout streak in pro sports, and the third longest streak in NBA history. The Mavericks’ inaugural season took place in 1980. In the decade since, the team has hit its share of rough spots, but the mid-90s saw the Mavs step into their own as one of the top teams in the NBA.
Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers have been a Lone Star State tradition since way back in 1972, when the Washington Senators relocated to Arlington Stadium. The team has had its ups and downs over the years, with many seasons never quite hitting the high mark of its winning years in the late 1970s, the golden years of legendary pitcher Nolan Ryan, and the Western Division Championship-winning team of the late 1990s. But, baseball is a pastime that is beloved by Dallas residents as much as it is in any American city, and a day with the Rangers is a day well spent.
Dallas Stars
The Dallas Stars NHL hockey organization started its life as an expansion team for the Minnesota North Stars, way back in 1967, but later relocated to the city of Dallas in 1993. Since striking out on their own, the Stars have had their share of successes. In fact, they’ve taken home seven division titles, two President’s Trophies, two Western Conference Championships, and the 1999 Stanley Cup Championship.
FC Dallas
Dallas has long been a stronghold of American football fandom, but plenty of locals are going crazy for the other kind of football. The FC Dallas soccer team has a loyal cadre of devoted and enthusiastic fans. Fan groups such as the Inferno, the DBG, and the Red Shamrock gather at the north end of FC Dallas Stadium every home game to show their love for the team.
