Self-Development Program at Intel
Good morning. How are you all today? I hope everyone is doing good here I am Mr. Elwin, standing here as your training manager for our company to discuss on our company self-development program. Intel so far has 4 types of self-development program which will help in developing knowledge and contributing towards the betterment of the organisation and thus it will strive towards improving yourself for betterment of future. Personal development is a lifelong process (Development, 2017). It is a way for people to assess our skills and qualities, consider as our aims in life and set goals in order to realise and maximise our potential. Self-development can enhance our employability prospects, raise our confidence and lead to a more fulfilling, higher quality of our life. Plan to make relevant, positive and effective life choices and decisions for our future to enable our personal empowerment (Development, 2017).

Why self-development is important? There are few benefits of self-development to both individual and company. Self-development gives self-awareness whereby you get to know who you really are, your values, beliefs and the purpose you wish to pursue. True fulfilment can never come from chasing other people’s dreams. If you want to achieve lasting happiness, you need to design your life based on who you are. Self-development also gives a sense of direction (Performance, 2017). Once you have raised you self-awareness, you are clearer on the things you wish to achieve from life. Decision-making becomes a lot easier. Tasks which used to take a great deal of your time, no longer make it onto your to-do list. You now realise that they do not move you towards your objectives and therefore are not worthy of your time. Besides that, it gives more improved focus and effectiveness whereby with personal development comes clarity. Even with an improved sense of direction, there will always be multiple tasks looking for your attention. As your personal development improves, prioritisation becomes much easier. You are clearer on your objectives and you can quickly identify which task will give you the best result with the resources available to you at that moment. Improved focus and effectiveness comes with knowing and playing to your strengths.
In others words, self-development gives more motivation and greater resilience. When you know what you want to achieve, it is easier for you to see the benefits of taking action. Even when the task ahead is not enjoyable, if you can see a clear benefit, you are more motivated to take the necessary action. There will be tough times in life. When these tough times occur, you need to have the skills and attributes to deal effectively with them. Self-development cannot prevent all bad things from occurring but it will help you deal with them when they do. Relationships are a double-edged sword. They either lift you up or drag you down. When you improve your personal development, you are better able to see which relationships are more investing in and which need to be cut loose. You also develop the skills to make the most of those relationships which have the most positive impact on your life.
There are four types of self-development program in Intel for our own development and company growth. Intel do offer Cross Training Program for self-development. Cross training is training someone in another activity that is related to their current work. This is a good way to learn new skills, combat boredom, and increase an individual’s value and flexibility. Cross training works with your workout routine with cross training for whole-body fitness that mixes aerobics, strength training, and flexibility. Blast out of the same-old, same-old. Varying your workouts is better for you. By using different muscle groups, you reach a higher level of fitness. Keeping things interesting also helps you stick with it. A sample cross-training schedule might look like this:
Monday: Swim laps
Tuesday: Lift weights at the gym
Wednesday: Do yoga
Thursday: Take an aerobics class that includes muscle-toning exercises
Friday: Rollerblade
You can also mix different exercises with strength and aerobic, into a full-body workout. For example, during one 30 minute session you might walk or jog for 10 minutes, lift weights for 10 minutes, and then do yoga for 10 minutes. No time? Break it up into shorter, 10-minute segments and still see a benefit. Pick your exercises based on your interests. Include at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on most days of the week, and at least two days of strength training. Try to also do flexibility exercises like stretching and yoga every day.

Besides that, Intel do practice mentoring program. There are two types of mentoring program at Intel which is formal and informal mentoring program. Formal mentoring is based on an explicit agreement with specific goals and a structured process to achieve those goals. Informal mentoring has a looser structure where a more experience employee takes another ‘under his or her wing’. The mentor provides the protégé with advice, insight, and support.
An employee benefits from a mentoring relationship because he has someone with greater knowledge and experience to turn to for advice. While a mentor won't do the employee's job for him, the mentor may demonstrate a task, guide the employee through solving a problem, or critique the employee's work. A mentorship may help an employee feel less isolated at work, too and encourage him to interact more with others. A mentor can provide an employee with tips on career growth and introduce the employee to other professionals. As the employee matures in his career, a mentor may remain a valued adviser to the employee.
Mentoring in the workplace can have long-term benefits as employees become more self-directed and develop stronger communication and problem-solving skills. This allows our company to become more creative and focus its attention on growth, rather than training. Mentored employees value collaboration and sharing of information, which can lead to a stronger organisation. Mentored workers are also apt to become involved in professional organisations that further both their careers and the profession itself. Examples of ongoing activity for mentoring program is ‘Mentees’ and ‘mentors’ program. Mentoring which matches youth or ‘mentees’ with responsible, caring ‘mentors’, usually adults has been growing in popularity as both a prevention and intervention strategy over the past decades.
Other than that, Intel also do Special Developmental Assignments. When working on a developmental assignment, we are still assigned to our regular positions, but for a period of time we will work on a particular assignment often with a different team leader. During the assignment we will perform tasks assigned, based on the identified career goals and interests and or the position they are filling. It can be a great learning experience and can assist us in our career goals and help us to determine if a particular job would be right for us. It broadens our knowledge of other functions and departments and offers us different and challenging job experiences.
A developmental job assignment is a formal opportunity for us to develop professional knowledge, skills, and abilities that would not otherwise be available through their normal work activities. Developmental job assignments should be primarily a product of the employee’s Performance and Development Plan (PDP). However, employees or the agency may pursue those assignments outside of this process. Developmental job assignments are voluntary. Developmental job assignments will normally last no more than twelve months, and must have prior approval of the current Department Head. Employees must have a six-month break between developmental job assignments. The time length and extensions of all assignments must include written justification. Example of special development assignment is employees in developmental job assignments retain their own position number, draw their current salaries including any scheduled periodic increments and do not attain permanent status in any other classifications.
Online courses is one of special assignment development program. Intel has created Education Web Based platform for us to get free online courses in order for us to gain knowledge every time. Fortunately now there are no limitations and you can get any resources in subjects you are interested in. There are plenty free resources as well, so lack of money is no longer a barrier. It does not matter in which part of the world you live either, since with Internet we all seem to be everywhere so we can. If you are unsure whether you should enrol in an online program or take a few courses, make sure that you request more information from some Intel education department. Remember that no barrier should get between you and your dreams, including your current location and financial situation. There are always solutions to your problems, particularly in today’s society with online education being so widely available to us all over the world.

Intel also do practice team building between workers. Team building is important in term of self-development and problem solving. There are many activities of team building. Traveling is one of the team building activity at Intel. There are so many amazing places to see, so many interesting people to meet and so many new experiences to have. Visiting different countries will help you realise how colourful, diverse and interesting the world really is. Each trip will bring new friends, new emotions, knowledge and memories. More you see broader you will think more open-minded you will become and easier you will overcome cultural differences. No matter where you go and how much you stay your trips will add value to the way you see things. There are few examples of games that perfectly will suit team building. Zombie Escape is creative problem solving & collaboration exercise.
Game Type: Zombie Escape
What You’ll Need: 1 rope, 1 key, and 5-10 puzzles or clues, depending on how much time you want to spend on the game
Instructions: Gather the team into a conference room or other empty space and “lock” the door. Beforehand, select one team member to play the zombie, dead eyes, arms outstretched, muttering “braaaaiiiinnnnssss” and all. The volunteer zombie will be tied to the rope in the corner of the room, with 1 foot of leeway. Once the team exercise starts, every five minutes the rope restraining the hungry zombie is let out another foot. Soon, the zombie will be able to reach the living team members, who will need to solve a series of puzzles or clues to find the hidden key that will unlock the door and allow them to escape before it’s too late.
As conclusion, self-development gives self-awareness whereby you get to know who you really are, your values, beliefs and the purpose you wish to pursue. Hence it is advisable to get involved in all the self-development program which is cross training program, team building program, mentoring program and special developmental assignments that has established by Intel in order for betterment of future of employees and organisation. Self-development program gives more self-awareness, a sense of direction, improved focus and effectiveness, more motivation, greater resilience and more fulfilling relationships (Ani, 2012).
