Abstract

This paper aims to estimate whether there is gender biasness on how people are treated in Sunway campus. The prime subject matter of this research is gender discrimination between males and females when it comes to the way they are treated. It is a multidimensional belief which is deeply embedded in the roots of society that females are more trustworthy than males. This is due to the generally perceived viewpoint that males are more likely to steal or commit crimes compared to females in media and in crime statistics, therefore we as a team have made an attempt to prove that females are treated better than males in the Sunway campus. To conduct the research, we as a group divided ourselves into two teams of different genders to walk around the campus and exchange money with the students around Sunway campus.

Introduction

Gender: Gender describes socially constructed differences between men and women, boys and girls etc. Gender is defined on the basis of social norms, behaviors, activities, relationship, responsibilities which are assigned by the society as appropriate for male and female.

Gender equality: The gender equality means that both male and female, as human beings, have equal rights and opportunities irrespective of gender. State or society will not discriminate between men and women on the basis of gender.

In summary, gender refers to the social, behavioral, and cultural attributes, expectations and norms that distinguish men and women. Gender equality refers to the extent to which men’s and women’s opportunities and outcomes are constrained—or enhanced—solely on the basis of their gender.

According to an experiment by Houser, D. (2017), the result emphasizes that while dishonesty is not associated exclusively with a single gender, several studies in economics and psychology have found that men are more likely than women to act dishonestly. Other than that, Gorsh, K. and A. Rau, H. (2017) confirms that predominant gender differences in compliance behavior, that is women are more honest than men.

Gender discrimination is the consequence of persistent inequality between males and females in Malaysia. The dimension and degree of discrimination against males and females manifests itself in different culture, race, religion and economies differently. Thus, different cultures have different value placed on gender. In Malaysia, males are more discriminated than females’ due to public perception on males being dangerous while females more trustworthy.

Hypothesis

The prime subject matter of this research is to determine the effect of way we are treated based on our gender. From this experiment, we can know that the independent variable (IV) is the gender. On the other hand, the act of changing the money with respective gender will be the dependent variable (DV). From this, our group had identified that females are treated with more courtesy than males. For example, if a male approached someone to exchange money, he will have a higher probability to be denied from receiving change from the person. In contrast, if a female is going to exchange money, the probability that she receives change will be higher than a male. This is because many people will choose to trust the females rather than the males.

 Methodology

Our research was to find out does gender affect the way we are treated. This research was mainly conducted at Student Life, Café 2, College Foyer and University café. The independent variable (IV) for this experiment is the gender of participant for experiment. On the other hand, the dependent variable (DV) for this experiment is the act of changing the money with respective genders. We approached the experimental group in person to ask them if they had change for small money and the results were recorded with video and pictures.

Procedure

1. Discussed and decided what topic we were going to do.

2. We had decided the type of experiment we want to do and also the topic.

3. Completed the proposal and passed to teacher (Miss Thasha).

4. Started to decide the way to do the experiment.

5. On that day, we brought some money and went to the venues that we had decided.

6. We targeted some students and started to test them by exchanging some small changes.

7. Besides that, some of our groupmates were taking video, pictures and record the number of students who were willing, not willing and really did not have the change to exchange money with us.

8. Gathered around to discuss and completed our report and edited the video also pictures.

Data Analysis

The number of time that our groupmates (male and female) attempted to exchange money with students in Sunway campus.

From this pie chat, we can clearly see that out of 15 students, there are 11 students who are willing to change with our female groupmates. It already exceeded half of the total amount. Besides that, there are also 3 students who are not willing to change with us and 1 student who did not have the small change.

6

Based on the chart above, there are only 4 students who are willing to exchange the money with our male groupmates. Not only that, 9 students do not want to change with us. We can see that the number of students who are not willing to change with males are more than those who are willing to. Lastly, there are also 2 students who did not have the small change.

• In conclusion, the number of time that females able to exchange the small change with students are more than males. This has clearly show us that females are treated more courtesy than males.

Discussion and Conclusion

This research was conducted to test the research question that we had chosen, 'Does gender affect the act of exchanging money with respective genders'. Our group speculated that when a girl asks to exchange money, people will be more willing to compared to the males. In our research, we also found that when a girl comes to approach the people, they will give their attention to the girl whilst when a guy approaches them, they will choose to ignore the male or just walk away. One of the reactions was they honestly did not have any small change to exchange with us. However, some of the students will just quickly reject us and say no without checking their purse or wallet. When a guy approached a girl, the girl looked at her boyfriend and her boyfriend said they did not have any small change without even checking his wallet. The possible explanation is the guy thinks that he will trying to seduce his girlfriend. Furthermore, there is also one situation that happened, a male groupmate was approaching a group of girls and tried to ask for small change, and this had ended up with the girls just walked and passed by him.

Our results for the experiment prove that females are treated more courtesy than males in Sunway campus. Therefore, our hypothesis is accepted. From this experiment, we proved that there are more students willing to exchange money with females compare to males. This is because they think females are more trustworthy than males. This also prove that people are discriminating between females and males. In addition, we as a group had learn a lot thought this experiment. For instant, we realize teamwork is very important when the time come to finish project together and also how to communicate well with stranger.
