Paste your essay in here… Everything that takes place in our day to day lives to revolves around money in some manner. Whether its the purchases you're making, the money you're working to receive, or the issue causing you to stress, its relevant in all of our lives one way or another. Income inequality is the manner in which income is unevenly distributed throughout a location’s population, in other words, its the gap between wealth and poverty, rich and poor. Countries in the western world have been facing this problem for decades with New York City being a powerful example, “Manhattan's top five percent of households earn 88 times as much as the poorest 20 percent, according to data released by the Census Bureau's American Community Survey.” This gap portrays the economic conflict between society and government and also between other nations. Income inequality mades opportunities limited and it portrays that ones work is worth more based off of who they are. this phenomenon has lead to youth becoming more unlikely to aspire things like career opportunities and education and more likely to drop out of high school or not pursue any further goals. organizations such as The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) who’s mission is to research and encourage policies to be implemented to help the economic and social well-being of our society. Countries are now finding other ways to take action against income inequality and to raise awareness about how our governments aren't helping. another theory which many people believe to be the fix to our income crisis is universal basic income. if this were to take place within our countries it would mean fair income as well as ahead start to any further education or career goals one many desire but not have the access to.
Income inequality is an ongoing issue that is now becoming noticeably worse in the sense that our poverty crisis throughout the western world is creating conflict within and between countries. its making crime rates rise as well as mental illness issues, parents especially are taking on more and more drug and alcohol addictions which is just adding more and more to the influential cycle. The UK being another example of poor social mobility and income equality, Unicef recently reported that “the UK ranks 13th among rich countries in meeting the SDGs for children. But it ranked 34th on the hunger goal, and 31st on decent work and economic growth.” (Pickett "Without equality of income there can be no equality of opportunity" 2017) statistics like this just don't add up when you're stating that you've made an agreement to take into action progression to diminish income inequality. the damage that these countries are causing themselves is creating more and more risks for those who do decide to make good of themselves by career or education, making it seem less valuable or not worth it. our nations are continuously falling into the same routine that the rich are taking advantage of the poor by altering policies and politics in their favour. credentials are far too often being based off of ones name or who they know rather than their performance. in order for income inequality to diminish actions such as higher minimum wage, more effective education, UBI, and raise taxes throughout the nations.
Adding to the debate, the topic of Universal Basic Income (UBI) focuses on the concept of each person having a guaranteed set income. the idea would be implemented in countries in hopes of ending poverty. it is also widely known now that with technologies advancements, its likely that in years to come, citizens of societies will have their jobs taken from them by robots and technology. presumably we will be provided with more, different, jobs but those will be unknown until the time comes. this topic goes hand in hand with the idea of Artificial Intelligence (AI), making the concept of UBI one that would be a necessary measure to be taken into action. its not necessarily the lack of work that is the issue needed to be prevented, but the widespread unemployment thats a possible outcome for a UBI policy. “Architecture could go the way of TV-making – a $30,000 professional contract replaced by a $300 intelligent home-designing app, with 10 times more people employed as a result, but at considerably lower incomes.” ("Universal basic income isn't the answer to the looming AI job crisis" 2018), this means that jobs we consider to be valuable today will once be replaced by lower costing and more simple options. This creates a fear globally and people want to know what the outcome and solution is. UBI will replace all welfare provided today and will redistribute wealth fairly among the nations. with this implemented people will feel more secure and eager to progress even more for themselves. physical needs such as food and housing would be less of an issue making economic growth possible and allow crime rates and mental illness’s to diminish. A UBI could potentially provide us with a link between human rights, economic security and gender inequality.
In addition to Income Inequality and social mobility is the role that sexism plays. Gender inequality in the workforce is a long-term problem that women have been fighting globally for decades only to still not in 2018 have guaranteed equality. The OECD being a supporter of equal pay for equal work shows that although countries pay gap’s are slowly lowering, it is at a far too slow rate. jobs dominated by women such as care home workers are waiting a long time to receive the pay raise they deserve compared to jobs mainly dominated by men, such as pilot’s who's incomes have been updated to standards. for economies to develop and progress they first need equality between genders so their is no longer conflict and competition based off jealousy wasting time. women are facing a harsh discrimination and have been for decades for pregnancy and maternity issues. it makes it difficult for women to return to the work force or even begin after child birth because of the alienation they're dealing with. because of any legal effort contributed it makes these types of issues ones that are almost hidden and not obvious unless being felt personally. This is just another reason women feel separated and victimized by our own government. Gender inequality in the work force ties into social norms and their negative effects. many people are still in the mindset that men are meant to be the breadwinner and that a woman’s work is of less value. this creates a barrier in career opportunities for both genders and the only way to diminish this issue is to encourage otherwise. The OECD says “Deeply entrenched gender stereotypes confine men to breadwinning and view unpaid care work as a female prerogative.” this means we need to change the attitude men and boys have towards unpaid work such as care taking in order to develop our economy in a just way.
The Organization for Economic Co-operation Development (OECD) was founded in 1961 in Franc., its main purpose is to create a policy agreement through countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, and many others to promote resolutions and policies to resolve common issues between countries. the OECD stands for equality as well as helps research other issues such as environmental and social change. they do this to improve our lives in small and big ways. although most countries contribute to the OECD it isn't a guaranteed way to motivate a country to do better for their society, the UK being a prime example. The OECD’s employment Outlook 2018 shows that the average employment rates are back to the pre crisis stage. although more people are working, wage averages aren't increasing, although unemployment has decreased, wages are still not improving. Another example of how UBI could improve current living situations. After a long spell of unemployment, people searched for work and settled for worse working conditions and lower paying jobs. This caused the OECD a lower wage average than before, not being necessarily positive considering the high cost of living compared to the minimum wage rates. In countries part of the OECD such as the Czech republic, Hungary, Mexico, japan Italy etc. the gender inequality wage gap in caused by the fact that low numbers of women are part of the labour market at all different ages, mainly due to raising and birthing children and the traditions of their culture. even the number of women returning to work are likely to wait years before or to only return to part time. all of these things are okay except the fact that this has caused issues for women because many choose to negatively portray mothering a child as not being serious about their career which also neglects their physical and mental needs. these concepts create a huge impact on women and their opportunities to career and education as well as their desire and motivation.
taking a look back at the history of income inequality, the issue was at a huge point during the 1930’s Great Depression. This is a predictor of the probability that depression and unemployment is linked together and shows that people need to at least stay somewhat busy for their physical and mental health. many people state this argument during the debate of UBI because they feel society will become lazy and dependant if UBI was implemented, but in reality the job conditions and environments would just be potentially completely different than before. these health issues affecting millions are found to be directly associated with income inequality, countries with bigger wage gaps were also found to have higher health issue rates such as cardiovascular disease, smoking addiction, alcohol addiction and association rates with women were much higher than men’s. it is a scary reality to have our employment rates be so distinctly connected to mortality and health issues related to stress, our physical health is a need that comes before everything else but with statistics like these its hard not to believe that the government and the wealthy aren't taking advantage of the middle and lower class.
The EI-PC refers to the Economic Inequality-Political Conflict organization that investigates the complex conditions of Income Inequality and its effects on our international relations involving politics. The Indian Journal of Political Science writes that conflict will arise is most situations but the extent of that conflict is always unpredictable. relationships between countries when in a negative area can lead to risks such as riots, armed attacks, and even civil war. While many choose to ignore politics, the conflicts that are relevant in our society puts its citizens at risk. for example, the NAFTA conflict between the US and Canada led to threats made y trump to implement force when his request wasn't accommodated. philosophers and political scientists such as Karl Marx Aristotle and Alex de Tocqueville found and believed direct links between political conflict and economic inequality. This stands behind the fact that for society and economics to develop in a fair, compromising matter, we first need to implement equality in its best form. Olsen looked at things from a different perspective finding that when income rates grew they were more concentrated and made things worse for the low income portion.
