Scientific Materialism
Scientists shock the world with all their discoveries. They work hard at what they do. Scientists such as Stephen Hawking, Carl Sagan, and Neil Degrasse Tyson have all worked hard, but they do not believe in religion. They believe in scientific materialism. To those scientist science is everything, everything is made out of materials. Scientist materialism is a belief of many that have people believe in anything else except God.
Scientists believe in science they believe that everything is made out of material and that everything is science. “Scientific materialism is the belief that physical reality, as made available to the natural sciences, is all that truly exists,” (Bailey). People believe that God did not make any of these animals, people, other materials because everything is made out of atoms and cells. Science is everything to people who believe in scientific materialism they block out mostly anything that have to do in the world. “If we fully accept scientific materialism, we would also have to discard art, literature, music, and many other fields of human endeavor that are essential aspects of our modern world,” (Bailey). These two beliefs change people’s whole world.
Science cannot explain everything that God does or creates. “But if faith in God requires independent scientific confirmation, what about the colossal faith our new atheists place in science itself,” (Bailey). People ask questions that science cannot even answer because it is not meant for science to discover only God can show people the way. Scientist cannot discover Heaven or Hell, but God can show people. God probably guides scientists into discovering these inventions or creatures because God plans for scientist to discover them.
Scientists view the world differently than others do. “As John Haught observes, ‘thinking of God as a hypothesis reduces the infinite divine mystery to a finite scientific cause, and to worship anything finite is idolatrous’” (Haught2008, pg. 43). Scientist think the world is created by the Big Bang not by God. They see God as a mystery as others probably see the Big Bang a mystery. Scientists believe that religion is just putting your faith in Jesus.
Scientist think differently than others do, they are smarter than most people. Scientist have theories for everything, “which unifies quantum mechanics and relativity and explains the origin and structure of our cosmos,” (Horgan). Scientists think of different theories such as multi-universe. The anthropic principle is another theory that scientist create thinking that the world is supposed to be observed the way it is. Science does not answer all the questions.
Some people do not even agree with some of these theories that scientist create. Thomas Nagel who is a philosopher is, “unimpressed with science that they are challenging its fundamental assumptions,” (Horgan). Scientist cannot answer their own questions. They answer some, but they cannot answer the questions about life that God created for the people. Science shocks the world, but sometimes disappoints it.
Thomas Nagel is an atheist who questions that science cannot answer questions about life from way back. Some theories have trouble because, “nor can it account for the emergence in our ancestors of consciousness, reason and morality,” (Horgan). Science cannot describe morality until God guides someone to find an answer for it. Scientists are just God’s puppets he guides them to discover what he wants them to discover. People want the answers to everything, but have to wait until God wants someone to discover that answer.
There are many scientists who are involved with scientific materialism, but one of the most famous scientist to believe in it was Stephen Hawking. Hawking believed that, “The life we have on earth must have spontaneously generated itself. It must therefore be possible for life to be generated spontaneously elsewhere in the universe,” (Hawking). He thinks that life comes on itself even though people who believe in God know that he created this world for them to live and have a life. Someone had to put this land here it could not just appear, but one of the smartest people who ever lived thought otherwise. Stephen Hawking was a genius who can back up all his explanation on how science is everything.
Stephen Hawking is a smart man, but he might not have all the answers himself. Hawking says, ““we don’t understand how life formed,” but he said, “The life we have on earth must have spontaneously generated itself.” Hawking has one idea on his mind, but then says another thing he is more so of a rationalist when it comes to ideas. Scientist questions their theories all the time, and possibly that is what Hawking is doing when he talks about life. People want to know what to believe which is science or religion.
People do not understand why people disagree with belief of God. Scientist agree with Hawking when he, “announced in a recent interview with the Guardian newspaper that there is no heaven.” Hawking views all of this belief in God as a fairytale. He brings a negative thought to the belief in God. Some people are going to follow the smartest man in the world even though God has people speak his word to get out to others.
Hawking views the body as a machine. He says, “that the body is a machine, the brain is a decaying computer, the universe mysteriously arose from background vibrations.” This theory of his about the body is just another reason to say he does not believe in God. He says all these smart ideas and theories, but people probably do not feel like the Terminator. Stephen Hawking does not have proof that God does not exist, but he argued most of his life that God is just a fairtyale.
