1). Grade Level: 1st Grade

2) Objective and Academic Component:

The subject I will be focusing on is language arts, students will be practicing sound- letter association. My main focus is for children to fully understand the alphabet which means knowing that speech can be turned into print, that print can be turned into speech, and that letters are used to represent sounds in the language. Letter recognition is the ability to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet.

3) Physical Activity Component

The physical component of this lesson will include me listing activities A-Z and the children demonstrating what I say. For example, A- Aerobics. Show me what aerobics is, B-Basketball. How do you shoot a basketball, C-Cycling. Cycle in place, D- Dancing. Dance in place and so on.

4) TEKS:

1.1B The student is expected to: follow, restate, and give oral instructions that involve a short related sequence of actions;

1.6E The student is expected to: make connections to personal experiences, ideas in other texts, and society with adult assistance

5) Lesson Description and Procedures:

Students will spread out throughout the classroom making sure everyone is arm width apart from one another.

Once everyone is a safe distance apart, I will stand in front of the classroom with a container containing the 26 letters of the alphabet and the activity on a card associated with it.

I will call on students left to right or right of left to pick a card from the container to read the card.

Once the student reads the card the students should perform the physical activity

If students appear confused/ looking around, then I will begin to perform the activity

Once running through all 26 letters of the alphabet, I will ask students to raise their hands if there was an activity that I didn’t list for the letter of the alphabet.

6) Inclusion and Disabilities:

A variation could be having a variety of A-Z activities that a student with disabilities could perform, so having 30 or so cards in the container.  However, depending on the disability, I will specifically cater to the child specifically. In example for a child that doesn’t have movement in their legs and the activity is C-cycling I would suggest cycling with their arms.

If the child's disability is severe where movement cannot happen, I’d have the child read from the container the whole activity. And designate them as the designated card puller.

7) Mastery Motivational Climate:

Task- I will use variety and diversity throughout the lesson to gain students interest in learning and have students get involved. By listing off different physical activities for each letter of the alphabet students will be introduced to new activities they may have never heard of and begin to gain interest. Also having a task goal before introducing the lesson is incredibly beneficial to students. Having a task goal allows students to focus on one task and makes them feel accomplished when finished.

Authority- Students have choices and leadership roles.  As a teacher I want students to have a sense of responsibility in and outside of the classroom. Having students coming up and reading each activity card in this lesson lets students feel as if they are a part of a greater part of the lesson. Switching off with class readers gives every student the opportunity to feel proud of themselves for reading out to the class.

8) Cultural Competence:

Use of culturally responsive language: Incorporating different languages in the lesson will help build understanding for other students from different cultures. It also affords the opportunity for students to become members of the world, through the cultural aspect of language. Additionally, it is easier at a young age to learn a language. Valuing student’s diversity also broadens other student’s minds. For example, when introducing lessons to the class I will also introduce key vocabulary to them in the language that pertains to the majority’s preferred language.

Getting to know your students: Knowing your students seems so simple yet is very valuable. You can have knowledge of their culture and relate content to their interests and deliver lessons that appeal to them. For example, at the beginning of the year I will interview students asking about their family and them this way I am getting a better idea of who they are. I can also refer back to this when a child is succeeding or not succeeding and ask them how things  are at home or if there is any stress in their life at the moment. Additionally, I can deliver lessons to their specific teaching style so the child can succeed better.
