Have you ever wonder why men and women are different or treated a certain way because of their gender? Growing up we’ve been around gender stereotypes and how some things are meant for girls and some things that are meant for boys. For example, girls love the color pink and purple while boys love to play with race cars. As we get older, we realize that there is lots of gender stereotypes and gender inequality that still goes on. Ask yourself what is Gender inequality? Gender inequality is the idea and situation that men and women are not equal. Gender inequality favors and values a gender more than the other gender. We live in the culture where genders are not treated equally and being it’s overpowered. Gender inequality in the workplace has been going on for a long time and we wonder when will this end? Most people get treated differently because of their gender or their race. We have been dragging gender inequality for so long and not much has changed in the environment. I imagine in a couple years, gender inequality will reduce by change and increasing equality.

Gender orientated contrasts or differences happen in numerous parts of life; be it culture wise, legislative issues, profession, relationships, at the family level, or even economy wise. It qualifies as one of the major issues of concern in the United States as well as around the globe. As a matter of fact, individuals do not actually consider a phrase like ‘quit acting like a young lady or a girl’ to be insignificant or to be perceived in the wrong way. For instance, women are essentially possessed by men in some Middle East nations and are not permitted to share a meal with men at the same table. Nonetheless, a major area of concern is the gender inequality problem or issue that is experienced at the workplace. Regardless of whether, the position of interest is a political one or just a normal job position at the McDonalds, ladies are being often subjected to gender disparity issues compared to their male counterparts. Gender based imbalance or inequality remains to be an issue in the workplace. For instance, female workers are dealt with in an unreasonably manner regarding how they are being paid. This can be attributed to the fact that women are believed to be insufficient and are overwhelmed by emotions to ever be ready to come to the point in which they get paid just as much as the men do, if not more. To worsen the situation, ladies or women are still considered weak when it comes to handling emotions in a workplace in comparison to men.

Women in the work environment are treated less than men. A woman is paid 78 cents for every dollar a man makes, and it is much different than a women of color. Women of color have high rates of unemployment and they’re unemployed for a long time. (Patrick). Women don’t get enough credit for any hard work that they do, and they’re being overpowered by men. In 2017, 42% of women in the united states have been discriminated at work because of their gender. (Parker, Funk). A man is more valued in a workplace than a woman doing ten times better. “Women who are members of racial minorities and of low economic class are more likely to experience these non-standard work conditions” (Gazso). People who live in poverty or the lower class experience lots of non-standard work conditions. We live in a world where you get paid less for the hard work that you put in and many people in the lower class with temporary jobs experience lots of that. Wage gap in workplaces are slightly getting narrowed down but the wage gap still exist.

Female workers account for almost 50% of the American workforce, but unfortunately they go home with lesser payments every day compared to male workers; this implies that they will not be able to take enough money to their families every other working day. Consequently, in terms of a full lifetime job, women are entitled to less retirement benefits due to ability to make as much money as the men do on a daily basis (Gillian, 83). Former president of the United States Barrack Obama was a supporter of the Paycheck Fairness Act. Fortunately, the bill refreshes and fortifies the Equal Pay Act of 1963, where it is illicit for managers or companies to pay women lesser amounts of money than men provided they are working for a similar measure of hours. Therefore, the issue becomes, regardless of whether it is unlawful, ladies are not standing up for themselves in light of the fact that even with the apparent Act in progress or in place, they are still being paid less in comparison to men. Research also shows that there exists some aggravating measurements concerning the gender inequality issue. It is believed that 57% of male workers have requested for raises and have had no issue about it compared to their female counterparts in which just 7% of them requested for pay raises due to the believe that the possibility of being denied the pay rise is more than men.

Traditional gender roles have a big impact in a women’s experience in the workplace. Growing up some people were taught that the men are expected to be the breadwinners of the family while women are expected to stay home to cook and clean. This tradition kept many women away from their dreams because someone said they’re not supposed to do that. Amber Gazso explained in her reading how “News discourse implicitly suggests that because women "naturally" desire to have families, they are essentially different than men and it this difference that determines their inequality in the workplace”.  There are different type of gender stereotypes like how women can’t play sport, women are not politicians, women are never in charge, the best women are stay at home mom’s, and etc. The gender stereotypes for men are that they are lazy, they are not nurses, men don’t cry, and etc. (Brewers). These stereotypes have an impact on those people which pushes them away and these stereotypes been going on for a long time.

Gender Inequality still exists because of the mistreatment going on in the workplace. There are stereotypes still going on today about what should and shouldn’t be a man or a woman’s job. Women are still getting paid less than men today and being harassed at workplaces. Gender Inequality is much worse for people of color because they have to face different types of stereotypes and it is much harder for them to get jobs that will support them. I think this is something that we all don’t really think about and we need an eye opening, so we can pass on equality for the next generation. “ Men don't choose if they're going to work or not going to work. The vast majority of them see work as their mission. Women make a choice for two reasons. First, it's a quality of life issue; how can I balance family and a career? Second, it's a question of what motivates them. For men, it's about accomplishment, status and earning power. For women, it's about influence”. (Gazso). In this article, the same applies for men how they have no choice but to work and women are given the choice whether they want to be a stay at home mom/wife or if she wants to continue her career.

In conclusion, the battle for equity in terms of payment when it comes to gender disparities at the workplace needs to be recognized to be regarded one of the vital initiatives towards achieving a balanced work environment. In addition, the hindrance of female workers in workplaces is nevertheless one of the components that guarantee the standardization of segregation among female workers in their workplaces as well as the negative effects that can be felt as far as the economic, social and political impediments of a country are concerned (Beneria, 30).
