Chapter 2

What Is Design Thinking?

Design thinking is all about developing and launching innovative ideas, concepts, prototypes

and business models is essential for the continuity of the firm. The reason that makes

innovation difficult is that a lot of people have to change their conviction and habits before

something really new will be deployed. The basic flow of Design Thinking Process start with

the problem or a challenge we have identified from- experience, dreams, necessity, facing

problems, existing products, creative nature, novel combination of existing ideas,

surroundings, doing work. Design Engineering is a general term that covers multiple

engineering disciplines including electrical, mechanical, chemical engineer, aeronautical

engineer, civil, Computer Engineering, Information Technology and

structural/building/architectural engineers. The uniting concept is a focus on applying the

'engineering design process, in which engineers develop new products or processes with a

primary emphasis on functional utility.

Learning Tools and Its Importance

 Design of a new product usually starts with a forward design process in which the

need is put forward by a customer/client.

 The students work in group to solve challenging open-ended design problems. They

come up with several feasible alternative solutions from which the best solution is

taken for further studies and analysis. Since the design process course in our

engineering school heavily emphasizes involving the students in hands-on learning

activities, it helps them to understand the how to buy the products easily.

with deep vision but also most importantly a kind person. We sincerely thank for her

exemplary guidance and encouragement. Her trust and support inspired us in the most

important moments of make right decisions and we are glad to work with him.

Engineering is a branch of Science and Technology where society expects lots of

innovation and creativity from engineers. But today’s education system has become very

stereotype which just follows the traditional teaching learning process. This needs to be

change in order to have maximum contribution from engineering students to the society.

INTRODUCTION OF PROJECT

Agriculture is the broadest economic sector and plays an important role in the overall

economic development of a nation. Technological advancements in the arena of agriculture

will ascertain to increase the competence of certain farming activities. We have proposed a

novel methodology for smart farming by linking a smart system through wireless

communication technology. Our system focuses on the features that make our application

more efficient which includes database of soil, crop, insects, voice recognition system,

weather forecasting and language translation that plays a vital role in making farming

activities easier. The application will have a weather forecast report which will help the

farmers to keep a check on heavy rains. Another interesting feature provided is the database

of soil, crops and insects. This database will provide information to the farmers in an easy

manner. Voice recognition will be provided in the application so that farmers can easily

access the information. For this purpose language translator will be used.

Chapter 3

EMPATHY CANVAS

To define any user centric problem we need to know the user properly. That was what this

canvas was all about. We thought of so many people but wanted to go for some people that

mostly remain untouched by technology but are larger in number. They cover a large mass

but are least touched with technology.

After that the next portion was stakeholders, who are the people that directly or indirectly

make an impact on the life of, our user. After thinking we got so many names. The simple

looking life of users is surrounded with many stakeholders that make an impact on his life

and profession.

Hands on exercise on Story Boarding Canvas

Last and the most interesting part was the ‘Story Boards’ which can be called the board of

emotion understanding the problem of society is one of the biggest challenges for engineering

student as till now they were making project on imaginary ideas. So the day 1 session was

based on understanding the domains of the problem in broader sense which emphasized on

interacting with the people of your domain area which included more of casual talk rather

than technical session. It focused on making people comfortable in discussing their problem

with our students. And this activity was named as story boarding canvass.

It helped us understand that when we build anything for anyone, the purpose and emotion

behind that are equally important. So many stories were striking to our minds and we drafted

the four which we thought were connected to the roots of being a User. This process

somehow gave us a feeling of being in the shoes of a user, and with that the first canvas was

complete.

Figure 3.1 Empathy canvas

8

AEIOU Canvas

Activity Canvas was the portion, in which we had to include the activities that people carry

out in their life. We tried to note down all the security and safety activities that goes on in the

background.

The activity part includes wireless network, database management, weather

forecasting and voice recognition.

The environment part includes the place where our application is to be used. It

includes farm, agricultural universities, laboratories.

The interaction part includes how our application will interact within the environment.

Technical environment includes the interaction of Smartphone and microphone, users and

database. Physical interactions include the people using it.

The object part includes which objects are needs in our application Smartphone,

sound transducer, microphone, using database.

The user part includes the users of this application. The users of our application can

be listed as follows: farmers, agricultural professors, agricultural students, laboratory

assistants, agricultural scientists etc

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CANVAS

In this Canvas we have mentioned purpose of our product, functions, features, revalidation

and product’s experience. Purpose of our product is to use shopping apps with voice

recognition to reduce effort of the customers.

The first thing we had to do was clarify the purpose of our product. Our purpose was clear: to

easy access and management and help customers.

For this purpose, we defined some functions that our product must do. These included, for

each of the function that our product fulfilled, we had to include one or more features that

supported that function.

In the next section we had to revalidate our product with the help of customers, who were, for

the moment, other teams that were working like us on different designs. Most of our features

were validated as extremely useful by other teams.

We had to redesign some features in the next section. These features were both the ones that

were extremely useful and the ones that we are moderately relevant. We optimized the

features that were useful and made them even better.

There was a section on this canvas where we had to write down about customer experience.

Here we had to write what the user would feel when using our product. We wrote about how

the work of people to be simplified and how grateful and innovative the user would feel.

10

Figure 3.3 Product development canvas

Ideation Canvas

11

Ideation Canvas is where first we started with people, where we simply thought about the people

for whom we want to solve the problem. For our product we listed the people like engineers,

operators, farmers, customer, updater, laboratory assistant, agricultural scientists, agricultural

professors and agricultural students. Then list out whatever activity every segment of people do.

Then thought for context/location/situation and finally for possible solutions.

We conclude that by implementing our system in the future as well as the effectiveness of the

system intention we can reduce the effort of our farmers and help them. It includes various

activites such as weather forecasting, database management, voice recognition and expert advice.

Figure 3.4 Ideation canvas

MINDMAP This canvas was a summarization canvas for all the other canvases we used

during the designing Process. People are the part of first canvas that is empathizes. We

reached to the final entities of this block through the whole process those were customeres

and related to our application.Identifying the problem and solution.

12

13

Chapter 4

Feedback analysis

Integrating customer knowledge in the research and development phase is a way of refining

products both before and after launch. The information collected on various channels can be

easily filtered and integrated in R&D. Thus, feedback analysis helps us to improve our

product. It also provides new ideas from the customers. Being responsive to customer

feedback also brings companies closer to their target audience. Here are some feedbacks from

the audience who will use our application.

Feedback 1: The targeted audience for our application are farmers. The growing technology

will undertake responsibilities of agriculture. There was the positive feedback reported from

the farmers. They thought it would reduce the effort as they could easily get results. They

also helped us by providing us the idea for the language translator to be added as a feature.

Feedback 2: Another group of targeted audience were agricultural students and professors.

We recorded a positive response from them. They thought of it as it would relieve their work.

Now they could easily concentrate on multiple work which would be time saving.

Feedback 3: One negative response was recorded from the farmers which turned us for

thinking that if wrong words are spoken then it should directly correct the words. This is a

good feedback which will help us in the future.

Feedback 4: Another negative response was recorded which gave us an idea that we need to

classify the given data into a proper database which would have a simpler graphics which

could be easily understood by everyone.

Feedback 5: A positive response was recorded which from the farmers which would also

provide them the information about the proper information about the prices of the crops.after

using this application there would be the uniform cost of all the prices.

Feedback 6: A negative response was recorded regarding the weather forecasting feature that

it would not be used in remote areas where network is available properly.

Feedback 7: A positive response was recorded by the homemakers that they could know the

condition of growing the crops on a small scale as hobby.

REVERSE ENGINEERING

What is Reverse Engineering?

It is a process of analyzing software with a view to understanding its design and

specification. May be part of a re-engineering process but may also be used to re-specify a

system for re-implementation. Builds a program data base and generates information from

this. Program understanding tools (browsers, cross-reference generators, etc.) may be used in

this process .

Reverse Engineering Process :

Reverse engineering often precedes re-engineering but is sometimes worthwhile in its own

right. The design and specification of a system may be reverse engineered so that they can be

an input to the requirements specification process for the system’s replacement. The design

and specification may be reverse engineered to support program maintenance.
