Introduction

Engineering is a branch of Science and Technology where society expects lots of innovation and creativity from engineers. But today’s education system has become very stereotype which just follows the traditional teaching learning process. This needs to be change in order to have maximum contribution from engineering students to the Society.

Design engineering is an initiative taken by Gujarat Technology University in this direction with the help and guidance of the professors of IITs and the GTU Innovation Council we are looking ahead in moving on the path of innovation.

Design Engineering is a general term that covers multiple engineering disciplines including chemical engineer, electrical, mechanical, aeronautical engineer, civil, Computer Engineering, Information Technology and structural/building/architectural engineers. The uniting concept is a focus on applying the ‘engineering design process, in which engineers develop new products or processes with a primary emphasis on functional utility.

While industrial designers may be responsible for the conceptual aesthetic and ergonomic aspects of a design, the design engineer usually works with a team of engineers and other designers to develop conceptual and detailed designs. They may work with industrial designers and marketers to develop the product concept and specifications, and may direct the design effort.

MIND MAPPING

Mind mapping refers to a technique that designers and engineers use to express and generate ideas. All that mind mapping really is, however, is a way to get all of the ideas in your head down onto paper. There is no right or wrong way to mind map. It is simply a visual representation of the thoughts in your head, and it often looks like organized chaos.

EMPATHY CANVAS

Hands on exercise on Story Boarding Canvas/ Empathy canvas:-

Understanding the problem of society is one of the biggest challenges for engineering student as till now they were making project on imaginary ideas. So the day 1 session was based on understanding the domains of the problem in broader sense which emphasized on interacting with the people of your domain area which included more of casual talk rather than technical session. It focused on making people comfortable in discussing their problem with our students. And this activity was named as Story boarding canvas or Empathy canvas. Here we would like to explain the aspects of this canvas with the help of the example taken up by our team. At the empathy stage we focused our subject “S.S. AGRAWAL COLLEGE CAMPUS”. Here we have to understand the difficulties, harness and disadvantages and how to manage it? At the empathy stage our domain area was INDUSTRIES. We took the visit of the industry for the better understanding and for empathies the problems.

Empathy Canvas:-

Basically there are four sections in user canvas,

1. User

2. Stakeholder

3. Activities

4. Story Boarding.

User :-

 LABOUR

 CUSTOMERS

 RETAILERS

 SUPERVISOR

Stakeholders :-

 HEAD OF DEPARTMENT

 MANAGER

 ENGINEER

Activities:-

 SPOT WELDING

 METAL JOINING

 ARC WELDING

 MILLING

 CASTING

 MELTING

 HOT FORGING

Story Boarding

Happy:-

 The industry that we have visited has an exceptional friend and diverse staff that welcomes into their family with open arm.

 It feels great to observe them and something about them. There is truly remarkable and collaborative environment when passionate individual works as them. In industry this great opportunity to work on a project using latest technology to solve problem in their industry.

SAD:-

 We know that it is great to work and observe in industry but industry has also some negative impacts on environments. As industries are degrading the environment and making it’s condition worst. Industries are like life saviours for human beings yet we are facing from many problems related to health.

AEIOU SUMMARY

AEIOU is a heuristic to help interpret observations gathered by ethnographic practice in industry. Its two primary functions are to code data, and to develop building blocks of models that will ultimately address the objectives and issues of a client.

AEIOU stands for five elements to be coded: Activity, Environment, Interaction, Object and User.

IDEATION CANVAS

After getting to know the user and his activities, the next step was to know problems. But to do that we had to come up with possible contexts, situations and locations of the activities. Because only after discussing the various possibilities of how several activities need to be done, we can find out the activities that are for managing the waste.

Ideation canvas:-

After getting to know the user and his activities, the next step was to know its problems. But to do that we had to come up with possible contexts, situations and locations of the plant and activities. Because only after discussing the various possibilities of how several activities need to be done, can we find out the activities that are difficult for the college campus.

Then arrives at the next portion of finding possible solutions. Here we had to list all the ways in which the problems can be solved. Our team belongs to the mechanical engineering department but we were told we could include technologies from other branches of engineering as well.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CANVAS

Purpose:-

 Metal Melting

 Forging

 Recrystallizing

People:-

 Labourers

 Customers

 Small Scale Industry

 Student

Components:-

 Transformer

 Locking Pliers

 Graphite Rod

 Plywood

 Copper Wire

 Hose Clamp

 Winding Coil

Product Feature:-

 Metal Melting

 Arc Welding

 Spot Welding

 Metal Recrystallizer

Product  Functions:-

 High Temperature

 Low Smoky

 Fast In Process

Customer Revalidation:-

 Easy To Operate

 Controllable Temperature

 Customer Review

Reject, Redesign, Retain:-

 No Rejection

LEARNINGS NEED MATRIX

Every group of students, with the guidance of their faculty guide, are required to identifyAt this stage, the needs of generic learning, which may be required while they develop their ideas. The learning requirements will depends upon and may be specific for the concept/idea for their solution. This will help students to do the research in a timely manner so that they are able to obtain the specific learning/understanding, they would require for designing the product.

Prototype

A prototype is an original model, form or an instance that serves as a basis for other processes. A prototype has many benefits such as the developer and the implement getting valuable feedback from the user. Even before the actual project is started.

REFERENCE

 We preferred the projects from YouTube, Google, and from various sites.
