Paste your essay in here…Greetings friends, family, faculty, staff, alumni, and the prestigious and noteworthy class of 2018. If you don’t know us, I’m Macy and I’m DaJohn. Before we begin we just want to congratulate all of you, and ourselves on being here today. We inhabit a world has a plethora of imminent dangers, nuclear wars, terminal disease, ……and unexpected breakouts by way of puberty. Despite all the odds, we still managed to graduate, so let’s give ourselves a big round of applause.
As we were looking for inspiration for this speech we spent all of last night watching every installment of iconic high school movies, from High School Musical to Mean Girls. From them we realized, The relationships, achievements, and even failures we’ve built over the years is something that we will never forget about. We entered Burbank High, four years ago, afraid and totally unaware of what was to come and now we’re leaving, MEN. I think we can all agree that our class is resilient, outside of these gates we survived the La Tuna Canyon fires and the intense eye strain from the solar eclipse, but that was all extremely mi-nute to what took place on campus this year, like figuring out the seating arrangement on senior hill, the surprise science SBAC test filled with content from sophomore year that we forgot even existed, preparing ourselves for our SATs and the homecoming dance which just so happened to be the same day, and especially bombarding the finance window the very last day of prom and grad nite ticket sales to make it all happen shoutout to Ms. Kutunyan we couldn’t have done it without you. More importantly, our resilience shows in the unapologetic way that we have stayed true to ourselves and our growing personalities. Street poet and philosopher Drake once said, “I love when people have their own ideas. You don’t have to be allowed anymore. Just be,”. In our opinion, this quote is a direct reflection of our class, and the path we are about to take. We are all prepared and strong because we see better for ourselves and realize our full potential, but we also endured the journey and kept going until we succeeded.
Often times we find it hard to believe we are standing here today because 2018 arrived quicker than the duration of this years girl’s powderpuff game. 4 years full of times we’ve laughed, cried, and of course, hid from campus supervision in the hallways. We’ve come a very long way from the immature underclassmen we once were. Since those first 2 years, terms such as “ turnt’, and “ yeet”, has long since expired, and been replaced with much more profound lingo like, “lit” and “shook”. And as we attempted to test the limits of those in charge, we were introduced to the most counterproductive process ever, getting caught skipping class, followed by a long wait in the student center causing us to miss even more class. Nevertheless, last year when we took the halls as juniors, many of us gained experiences we would need to begin our next steps. We met plenty of new friends like PSATS, part-time jobs, drivers licenses, and SparkNotes, but for many more of us, it just meant Stage 1 Senioritis. Binge watching, procrastination, the diminishing size of our backpacks and finding out just how great we were at working under pressure.
It is our belief that the Class of 2018 has faced our fair share of doubt and adversity, especially from the anonymous user behind the Twitter account, MyBurbankSports. However, every Friday night the Varsity football boys showed it was time to EATT, as they became Pacific League Champions. and Even cancer couldn’t stop us as we raised over $100,000 towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help find a cure and see Mr. Lujan drink that sardine and pickle smoothie at the rally. And despite the perils occurring across the nation with gun violence throughout schools, we deeply thank our staff and administration for always making our safety their top priority.
Whoa, that got deep. Yeah, almost as deep as our families’ pockets need to be to pay commitment, tuition, room, and board fees for the 60% of students that will be continuing school at either community, public, private, or vocational colleges in the fall. We also want to give an advance thank you to our graduates here tonight that will be serving our country. But don’t worry families, this class definitely believes in a gracious and opportunistic hand out considering that we have collectively received over $400,000 in various scholarships and grants.
No matter the path that we do take, our class definitely has ambition. In this crowd are the faces of success and determination, because let’s face it there are now loans to be paid off. Nevertheless, there is security in the fact that we are unsure of what the future holds, but based on what we have overcome we know we can do it. This ceremony marks more than just the end of high school but also the last time we have the safety net around us. and as we progress, we are going to continue to learn to grow into our independence. We will take the structure and lessons we have been given by all of you parents, friends, family, coaches, mentors, and teachers and use it to the best of our abilities. and whether we have things planned out to a tee or we are just going with the flow… we have been made aware that life is coming at us and only we can make the personal decision to flourish or fail.
Either way, it goes, we are grateful that our time here has been fulfilled and know it will always be an honor and one of our greatest achievements to have been a bulldog. Class of 2018, it is with great pleasure that we announce in the grandiloquent vernacular of President Barack Obama, “We out”.
