The Effects of 1st and 2nd Year Students With Part Time Jobs on Their Academic Performance

Problem statement

College students struggle to cover their expenses and their loving cost making them have to work a part-time job to be able to cover it all. (Working to live, 2008). The students lack of academic performance is the because of their part time job that takes up all their time with the studying which then affects their GPA, their concentration in class and their overall grades for every class. This afflicts with the students time to be able to receive all the help they need for a certain subject or topic or to be able to with a tutor to get further explanation of a certain topic. Full time students should only be able to work a certain amount of hours a week which this will have the students be able to balance their work life and school life to a better extent. Keeping track of the hours should be with the school to be able to get the school the help that the student may need to help them improve or keep steady of their academic performance. But, schools don’t have those type of programs and some do. But there are advisors and certain staff that have this role to help the students to not over whelm themselves and really concentrate on their academic achievement. Students must decrease their working hours to be able to really work hard on what they need to be able to improve their academic performance. Academic achievement is key to students because that shows them how much work the must accomplish to be able to reach to the GPA they require.

A Quantitative study will be conducted with this experiments to get results on how kids with part time jobs see an effect on their academic performance. There will be surveys to be done to finalize the data to get the best results. With students working , they have one reason, it’s because they need to cover their financial needs like their tuition, pocket money, their living expenses and much more. But for them to get the money that they need they need to be able to work enough hours to get that money, (Dundes, Marx, 2006/2007). This study will be done to show results on how much working a part time job will affect their academic achievement. Also, with the results, it will be used to seize a plan that will help them improve their work and study skills. Data will be collected from 1st and 2nd year undergrad students with part time jobs. It will be done software assisted to organize the date that will be collected from students that took the survey through their email (Kumar, 2015).

Literature review

Introduction

College students go get an education because they might want to be success in life and be a difference in the world someday. That requires you to go to school, get the education, have a steady  job and then complete your life. Some students now a days with our economy having different classes, with some of the low and middle classes those students may need to get a job to get themselves through the education they need. Student need to get a part time and being a full time student may affect their academic achievement. This effects a lot of students with their academic performance because they have to balance working up to 28 hours a week and being a full time student with at least 12 credits. With all the stress it does add up to a lot of frustration and lack of sleep and tiredness from all the pressure. Students with a part time job may have a good affect from the money to pay of the tuition but it has a bad effect on their studies (Watts, 2002).

This literature review will discuss the effects of a part time job of a college students with their academic performance and their difficulties with balancing the difference between their part time job and their school life with all of their academic responsibilities.

This study will further advance all researcher to find out more information on the balancing between the college students and their part time job. This is important to conduct this experiment to increase knowledge of research to be able to get as much information as they can to help with their work and findings.

Effects on Academic Performance

Effects on academic performance is very important to many student because it shows what is done and what needs to be done to be able to have your academic achievement at its complete best. Academics started out with having schooling for 4 years and requiring the basic studying of English, mathematics, social studies, and sciences, (Green and Jaquess, 1987). With the basic 4 year school it will help with getting a degree in a major that will help the students be able to receive a degree that will help them step up in life. During their 4 years, they might have to receive a job that will help with their costs of living. Working a job during the four years of college will affect the academic performance of the student. A part time job that requires you to work a good amount of hours will affect you GPA and your grades for individual class.  This is on the grounds that low maintenance occupation can enable understudies to cover costs for fundamental things, assuage money related weight of their folks, enhance employability after graduation, offer chances to increase functional (transferable) abilities, enhance connect with chiefs, associates and clients, and give an extra measurement to their social lives. It could likewise be contended that understudy business can adversely impact understudies' fulfillment. This is on the grounds that understudy business or time spent on working may prompt diminished time spent on contemplating, school exercises and assembling with relatives and companions as underlined by the Dundes, Marx, 2006/2007 zero-total time-designation display. Subsequently, understudies' fulfillment of the individual's work's identity prone to be unfavorably influenced. Put it in an unexpected way, numerous specialists have given clarifications to these negative impacts of working while at the same time going to school can likely prompt investing less energy in examining, missing classes, being late for classes, experiencing issues gathering in classes, making less utilization of college offices including libraries and PC labs, and feeling depleted. It could likewise be contended that work can emphatically influence school GPA. This is on the grounds that low maintenance occupation can enable understudies to cover costs for fundamental things, alleviate monetary weight of their folks, enhance employability after graduation, offer open doors for understudies to increase down to earth (transferable) abilities and learn new information, enhance their system with administrators, associates, and clients, and give an extra measurement to their social lives (Blaga, 2012). Along these lines, the previously mentioned advantages of working while at the same time going to school can enhance understudies' school fulfillment and joy, which thus help their scholarly execution (GPA).

Methodology

This will be done as a quantitative study which will be done through surveys that will be conducted and done to college students that are in their 1st and 2nd year of their undergrad. This will be software assisted to be able to organize all the date and get the best results, (Kumar, 2015). This is the best study because it will be hard to find specific kids that work and is with in those years. With the surveys that will be sent to as many students as possible will be limited to only those that are within those requirements, on the survey there will be the first question asking if they meet those requirements. This will condense the student size to only those eligible to take it which will not cause any false findings and results. Which will help with getting a accurate and efficient results. There was a 20 Question survey that was produced and made to get me the results that I need to help with the research. With my research, I surveyed undergraduate students that were still in their first and second year of college. The survey was very easy, I used an anonymous link, that I uploaded to my social media like snapchat and Instagram which allowed me to reach to all my friends. With this resource, I uploaded the link every 24 hours to make sure that everyone really took the survey if they didn’t get a chance too. This is where it got me the most results. I also uploaded through an email to all of my classes that I know has a the first and second year undergraduates. I will also did go to my old professor and asked them if I can step in to their class for the last five minutes talk about my survey and the professor emailed it out to her students. This got some results but not as much as I expected to get. I disseminated my survey usually during the middle of the day where people were either walking to their class or just hanging out. I got about 10 respondents on the days that I was in school which were Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday’s. There was a great feature where I used a QR code and I walked and made people scan it with made it a lot faster for students to get the link and take the survey really quick. I hit the minimum number of respondents during the last days of the survey data collecting which allowed me to get accurate results that I needed to finish my research. I believe that I have collected enough data for me to finalize the data collecting section of this research to be able to write my conclusion and discuss my findings.

Findings

Through my research of showing how college student with part time may affect their academic performance. I have found that College kids most of the time get a job to be able to pay for their financial needs and for tution and to assist their parents
