1.3 Problem specification

• electricity meter reading for electricity usage and billing is done by human workers from home to home and building to buildings.

• This system will require huge number of workers and long working time to achieve  the complete area data collection and billing process.

• Now-a-days the demand for electricity is increasing at a constant rate throughout the population and is being utilized for various purposes wiz, agriculture, industries, household purposes, hospitals etc.,.

1.4  LITERATURE REVIEW AND PRIOR ART SEARCH

    

 E. Moni Silviya, K. Meena Vinodhini, Salai Thillai Thilagam. J. is the gives idea under the titled “GSM Based Automatic Energy Meter System with Instant Billing”. System which measure the current consumption unit through IR sensor unit. The IR transmitter is placed in the rotating unit of the EB meter. The receiver photo diode is placed in a certain place which is used to find no of rotation. By getting the number of rotation we get the current consumption. These system may be applied in Industrial control, medical system and access control.

George are the give ideas under titled “GSM Based Automatic Energy Meter Reading System with Instant Billing” In this system the two wire power supply is connected to the energy metering IC through the analog front end of the MCP3905 energy meter evaluation board which provides average active power information via a pulse output which may be then used to be processed by a Micro Controller Unit (MCU). The GSM unit is interfaced to the micro controller via a MAX 232. User GSM modem transmits usage details to office modem. Every house/premise has a unique number (consumer number), which is given by the corresponding authority.

   Smart energy meter with reading indication has been developed by using GSM. Which is more useful to consumer for billing and maintaining less bill payment and it decreases the human needs for paying and other issues related to billing. We can extend it for industrial purposes also by interfacing three phase meters but the circuit have to modify for getting proper voltage to the controller. The use of different methodology in this Automatic meter reading system provides numerous advantages. GSM based AMR system is the most advantageous system than other as this system provides the consumer directly with the billing through SMS. This could make the process of meter reading quit easier. GSM infrastructure has full coverage of all houses in the country which makes the implementation of GSM power meter easier. Multiple transceivers used in automatic meter reading system incorporate no data loss. From all these proposed methodology it can be conclude that automatic meter reading system can be really proved as a boon for consumers and electricity board. The data collection and manipulation task becomes fast and easier. Any modification can be made to the code in less time. Changes in rate or unit calculation can be done very effectively

Home automation is fast popularity nowadays. An automatic remote meter-reading system based on Wi-Fi is presented in this paper can be considered as a part of home automation. The Energy data collection system is a very important step and part in the research of energy visualization and analysis. Through this system, consumer can easily know their electricity usage at any instance and their behavior to reduce their energy consumption and costs. Wi-Fi based smart energy meter system is presented in this paper is in terms of reduces errors, absence of consumer while taking reading etc. There are many possibilities to collection of energy data. The technology of e-metering (Electronic Metering) has gone through rapid technological advancements and there is increased demand for a reliable and efficient Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) system. This paper presents the design of a simple low cost wireless GSM energy meter and its associated web interface, for automating billing and managing the collected data globally. The proposed system replaces traditional meter reading methods and enables remote access of existing energy meter by the energy provider.

Rajesh Parvathala, T Venkateswara reddy, N V G Prasad gives the ideas under titled “ARM Based Wireless Energy Meter Reading System along with power on/off circuit” Basically system has 3 sections, Meter section, control unit section & mobile unit. Control unit is a consisting of ARM 7 processor LPC2148, zigbee module, GSM module and 3 switches (STATUS switch, ON switch, OFF switch) Meter unit is a consisting of ARM 7 processor LPC2148, zigbee module, energy meter, relay. The entire operation of the system will do from control unit by proper selection of the switches. When switch 1 is selected then the system reads the energy meter reading in terms of number of units wirelessly through zigbee modules & then electrical bill is measured for corresponding number of units consumed by the energy meter & sends the information regarding the electrical bill will be sent to consumer mobile through GSM module message consisting of information regarding electrical bill & the deadline for the payment of the bill. When the consumer fails to pay the electrical bill in time then the power supply to energy meter will disconnect wirelessly by proper selection of switch& then the status of the energy meter sent to the consumer.

For this work existing meter reading techniques in India are analyzed and conducted an extensive study on different energy measuring instruments available now. In existing system either an electronic energy meter or an electro-mechanical meter is fixed in the premise for measuring the usage. The meters currently in use are only capable of recording kWh units. The kWh units used then still have to be recorded by meter readers monthly, on foot. The recorded data need to be processed by a meter reading company. For processing the meter reading, company needs to firstly link each recorded power usage

datum to an account holder and then determine the amount owed by means of the specific tariff in use.

Many systems built on various platforms have been proposed by different research groups all over the world for Automatic Meter Reading. There are two types of AMR systems, wire-based and wireless. Power Line Carrier (PLC) and Telephone Line Network (optical/ cable) are wire-based AMR system and several related works are available. Many emetering systems have now been proposed, based on GPRS,Bluetooth,.Design of an Electric Energy Meter for long-distance data information transfers which based upon GPRS is proposed in. These systems can’t be implemented so easily because the

regular use of GPRS is still a dream to the common people .A

GSM Energy meter with instant billing facility is introduced in but still the problem of missing SMS will degrade the accuracy and performance. A more reliable and user friendly system with web portal for multiple access using the advanced Visual studio .net frame work is created in this project which will manage the data efficiently even if there is  loss of SMS. It makes the design different from the previous

proposals. The GSM/GPRS channel is a very useful means of communication as sending data as SMS turns out to be a very handy tool, due to its good area coverage capability and cost effectiveness. Different state electricity boards in INDIA started using GSM facility for fault management and so there is increased demand for this method.
