Task 1, Part B: Preparation Phase
Description
In task one, we prepared the groundwork and necessary skills to help you learn how to access complex scholarly texts that deal with new and difficult topics, and use language that can be initially intimidating. We learned the skills needed to engage with scholarly ideas, concepts, language, and texts.
In this task, we do the preparatory work needed to be successful in tasks 2 and 3 – and, in particular, task 3 – the culminating assessment for this subject. To write a well-developed, mature, and sophisticated discussion paper (or scholarly product of any kind), you must engage in thoughtful research, and synthesise ideas from a wide range of scholarly sources.
This task is the bridging work between knowing how to locate and access scholarly works, using critical thinking to evaluate their contribution and worth, and synthesis to create your own ideas and product. In this task you are asked to demonstrate your ability to 'read like a writer' and think ahead while engaging with scholarly reading material.
You are asked to demonstrate progress toward task 2, and your engagement with OneSearch.
Instructions
Read each question carefully and provide a scholarly response, using evidence and academic writing, on the template provided. Submit the completed assessment task template to the Task 1, Part B Dropbox in LearnJCU.

Question 1
1. Using OneSearch, and the lessons learned in CS1022 on how to search for and locate scholarly works, discuss three themes/potential implications of artificial intelligence (AI) you have found in the literature of your discipline.
Note: If you are unsure, which discipline you are going into – you will have to select a discipline just for this semester.
You must provide a brief overview of three themes/potential implications researchers in your discipline are concerned about, and explain how you have narrowed this down to one specific area of research. An example response might look like this:
I am going into nursing and, using OneSearch, I have noticed that there are many areas of research and focus in nursing and health literature. I have narrowed my search to assistive technologies. Within this I have noticed specific themes such as how patients need human interaction, the streamlining and enhancement of nursing using AI and reducing toil, and the psychology of care.
In the theme of streamlining and enhancing nursing using AI scholars are interested in ideas such as how the implementation of specific AI can reduce the workload of nurses via targeted automation. Researchers are interested in the idea that work flows can be maximised and nurses freed up to focus on their patients' physical care needs via the implementation of AI. Nurses have indicated that they feel that this will only be useful if they are involved in the decisions made around what, when, where, and how these technologies are implemented. In addition, nurses express concern around the potential for AI to be deployed in a manner that reduces the nursing role to one that is purely functional and risks patients feeling like they are less than human.
My initial research question is:
What might the advancement of AI into the nursing sector mean for patients and current/future nursing staff?
In the box below, please construct your response that is specific to your discipline, and initial research question:
I am going into accounting, using OneSearch, I have found that there are many articles that mentioned AI. I will be focus on how AI can affect the future of my career as an accountant. I have found that AI can help me in auditing the cash flow of a firm, affect me on decision making.
In the theme of auditing the cash flow of a firm, researchers interested in use of artificial intelligence in integrated audit support systems which can help auditor to track the money. Researchers focus shifts to a discussion of the extant literature on artificial intelligence in accounting with an eye towards how accountant can once again take a leadership role in the application of artificial intelligence techniques to support accounting decision making. Researcher also focus on how AI can track money to some suppliers over the past year or track income and expense transaction.
My initial research question is:
what might the advancement of AI into accounting mean for a firm?
Question 2
2. In the box below – provide your 'working' or preliminary thesis statement for task.
a) Make sure you revisit the CU1022 Learning Portfolio page on the "structure of essays" and revisit 'thesis statements' on this page. There is also abundant material in the weekly folders to assist you to understand how to write a thesis statement. We have also covered this in class on more than one occasion.
b) Here are some additional resources if you are still unsure:
c) Remember, the thesis is the answer to your research question. You need to rephrase the research question so that it forms a clear statement (NOT a question) that is arguable/debatable.
For example, my preliminary thesis statement (to the research question outlined in Q1) would be:
Nurses should be involved in decision making regarding the integration of assistive technologies and artificial intelligence into health care plans in order to ensure holistic patient care.
AI is very important for accounting, it will help accountant to work and make it easier. The firm need to be involved in every situation regarding to maintain and monitoring how AI and accountant work in order to minimize problem that might occur.
Question 3
3. Provide evidence of your engagement with OneSearch by giving us APA references for 5 articles you have found that you might use to answer your research question.
You must also provide a brief 6-8 sentence answer on how each article helped you answer your question, and thus create a working thesis statement. You must use ONLY journal articles at this stage (you might read books and other sources, but you must supply only journal articles below).
An example answer might look like this (but you would do this for five different articles):
Article 1:
Pineau, J., Montemerlo, M., Pollack, M., Roy, N., & Thrun, S. (2003). Towards robotic assistants in nursing homes: Challenges and results. Robotics and Autonomous Systems, 42(3), 271-281. 10.1016/S0921-8890(02)00381-0
My topic is the role AI can have in reducing toil and streamlining workloads in the nursing profession in order to allow better patient outcomes and greater capacity for nurses to engage with caring activities. This article will be useful in exploring how technology and AI such as robotic assistants can be deployed to support the work of nurses and other health care providers.
Article 1:
O’Leary, D., & O’Keefe, R. (1997). The impact of artificial intelligence in accounting work: Expert systems use in auditing and tax. AI & Society, 11(1-2), 36-47. doi: 10.1007/bf02812437
In my first topic I mentioned about AI will help me to audit the financial report. This article will be useful to help me exploring how AI works to audit the financial report. This article has focused on the impact of a technology (expert systems) on work processes (accounting), with particular emphasis on differences of effect on auditing and tax work.
There are many analysis from the expert in this journal articles. This journal has a concern how accounting activity works with AI. It is also mentioned how taxes will work with AI in a firm
Article 2:
Malone, D. (2018). Expert Systems, Artificial Intelligence, and Accounting. Journal; Of Education For Business, 68(4), 222-226.
This article has become my references for decision making. Decision making is important to lead the way where the company want to go. In this article, the potential applications in accounting that may be served by an expert system are outlined and evaluated conceptually. Potential application domains examined include tax, auditing, financial report, managerial decision making, personnel selection, accounting education and training, and decision reinforcement. This article also has a definition of the expert system that can decide in a nonroutine environment.
Article 3:
Baldwin, A., Brown, C., & Trinkle, B. (2006). Opportunities for artificial intelligence development in the accounting domain: the case for auditing. Intelligent Systems In Accounting, Finance And Management, 14(3), 77-86. doi: 10.1002/isaf.277
This paper reviews the nature of accounting and auditing problems and the need for application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to the discipline. The discussion includes current accounting issues for which new AI development should be fruitful, particularly auditing and assurance.
