Topic: Saving the Coral Reefs

United State’s Roast Sheet on Saving the Coral Reefs

Main two points that can be fully integrated into saving coral reefs are to find solutions overfishing and coastal pollution/development, because these can overall improve the liveliness of the coral reefs and extending their lifespan so new methods can be found to be integrated into saving the reefs. As more coral bleaching events occur we need time to save this foundation species or the foundation of many species that live in the ocean will lose their home and not have enough time to adapt to the rising temperature of the ocean.

Dynasafe- provides worldwide support on safe disposal of dangerous gases and toxins

Examples of solutions that they have previously developed to meet particular client’s needs include off-gas filter systems, dry and wet off-gas treatment systems, and technologies for the incineration of hazardous and highly toxic waste. Oxidation form, take advantage of living organisms that consume or metabolize off-gas properties, Photolytic treatment (Chemical decomposition induced by light or other radiant energy. and non-thermal), destroy contaimates using UV light or electrical light.

Precision Seafood Harvesting invented Biodegradable nets with tracking devices Applied to species specific nets as well (started in New Zealand but has not been expanded globally)

This technology creates escape holes to let (preferably young or unwanted) fish to escape from the nets, it also uses a biodegradable additive d2w to make the nets so that the nets overtime will degrade and not pollute the ocean surface

Using ultrathin RFID transmitters the nets will be able to be tracked and located, by doing so many nets soon degraded and were proven so by the tracker floating in the empty ocean

Education and awareness through pamphlets and a social media campaign

They will present the future dangers to the coral reef environments, these will show how many fish populations (can increase or decrease) and coral reefs are being destroyed, but since out of sight, the average human has not realized this. Plan: Develop a United Nations seal of sustainable fishing, that will be supplied to fisheries to implement upon products if proven to utilize sustainable fishing methods. Due to many unsustainable farming methods such as bottom trawling will show that these companies do not care for the health of the Earth and

Urges the selection of managers that are trusted and reliable

U.N. officials will examine fisheries

Creating more securing markets

Pursuing the proposition of catching less fish,

Therefore rising the price of fish, building the economies of struggling nations

These governing officials will limit harmful methods of fishing

Such as bottom trawling, bycatch of fish, and ghost trawling.

Through this it will restrict the use of these harmful methods

Through time the use of these will be terminated as fisheries continue the restriction and go toward more eco-friendly options

Accepts the use of aquaponics in alternative bodies of water such as;

lakes, bayous, ponds, rivers, irrigation ditches and pond systems when necessary

Implements disease prevention protocols and techniques to ensure the health of the producers and consumers

Funded by the NGO Seafarms

Recommends the creation of a bi-annual global conference to discuss scientific findings and statistics relating to fish and their reproduction

Finding legal methods with the use of technology that wouldn’t harm the environment

Allows for the collaboration of countries

Helps them find country specific alternatives that can benefit the economy

Through the already existing Regional Fishery Bodies which

Are a group of states or organizations that are parties to an international fishery arrangement that

Work together towards the conservation and management of fish stocks

Can play a critical role in promotion long term sustainable fisheries where international cooperation in conservation and management

Endorses the usage of surveillance of coral reefs

Using cameras that will provide vision in the ocean with

Funding from Catlin Insurance

Lenses that can view up to 50 miles, watching over ecosystems.

Vessel Monitoring System for the tracking of illegal fisherman and surveillance of bodies of water

Automatically scans for authentication on vessels to check for illegal fishers

Increases monitoring, control and surveillance

Implementation of  Moves for the Monitoring ocean waters with the help of the NGO Microflown Maritime.

This NGO supplies ocean buoys that can detect seismic waves in the ocean given off by fishing boats.

Further requests countries striving towards the rehabilitation of coral reefs.

The NGO Coral Vita will help produce genetically modified polyps, made more resilient to toxic waste.

This will help insure the revitalization of coral reefs, aquaculture habitats, and aquaculture food supplies.

Supports the creation of surveillance fleets

Fleets will funded by the U.N.

These fleets would monitor areas that are dealing with bycatch and ghost-fishing

These areas will report back to the U.N. and NGO’s such as NOAA

This would allow the U.N. to talk back to governing officials of fisheries, These governing officials will recognize this and warn ships that have violated rules and will take away commercial license or if forced to will monitor ships to end their harmful acts occurring in the ocean

Adopts WOP Hydro Walls for sustainable fishing and energy production

Utilizes the movements of fish’s kinetic energy to create energy to power small or medium power grids

Increases livelihood opportunities

Stresses the importance Blue Growth Initiative to promote fishing sustainability in countries

Lays a suggestion framework for countries to follow to improve their blue economy

Increases livelihood opportunities and saves biodiversity and improves corrupted environments

oceanic safe zones or no-catch zones to protect specific species from extinction

Incentives can be provided by GreenPeace to identify the protected areas

Allows these zones to be integrated into daily life

Fisheries will be able to retain workers and reduce the amount of money lost

These are sustainable practices, helping the fish populations grow, rather than leading to extinction

Which will be temporary in some areas in order to avoid a complete shutdown of a region

Considers the use of the Ocean Farm Act (OFA) which

Are agreements between different countries and China that

Allows China to build our high tech and advance deep sea fishing farms and then sell them to wither private companies or the countries’ governments

Mature up to 1.5 million fish in 14 months

Is designed to test biological and technological aspects of offshore fishing

Is a response to the world’s increasing need for more fish and unemployment of fishermen

Gill netting:

Giant nets dragged along by the boat

Measures such as ensuring a larger mesh size that allows smaller fish to escape, fitting noise devices that keep dolphins away from the nets, and choosing areas to fish where vulnerable species are not often found will all help stop animals like dolphins and seabirds from being caught in the net. In addition to this, fishermen should be properly recording everything they catch – including dolphins and porpoises – which help us understand whether or not they are fishing in a sustainable way; there are certainly some gill-netters out there doing the right thing.

Bycatch:

The incidental fish that are caught and disposed of apart from the target fish

Overfishing in the pelagic zone (the mid-water areas of the sea where tuna, mackerel, herring and sea-bass used to be plentiful)

Circle hook, which is designed to prevent deep-hooking and to only hook in the corner of an animal's mouth.  In recreational fisheries, the circle hook can reduce hooking injuries and mortality in catch and release fishing. In commercial fisheries, circle hooks may decrease bycatch and post-release mortality of bycatch.  Circle hooks have specifically been used to prevent sea turtle bycatch in longline fisheries.

Push this through

It has been proven to reduce sea turtle bycatch by 78%, and leatherback bycatch by 65%, and decrease loggerhead bycatch by 55%

Even though they do not increase target catch, they reduce bycatch, which is still enough.
