ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate both the availability and utilization of educational technology by English language teachers in boys elementary schools in Jeddah city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. There is a little evidence about the supply of educational technology in elementary schools and very few studies that are concerned of whether the available technology is being utilized . Thus , this study will provide knowledge and statistics that will achieve better understanding of the current technology utilization , as well as will identify the barriers of education technology utilization in the elementary schools in Jeddah city .

Introduction

Current study is about old and modern educational technology availability and utilization  , especially in boys' elementary schools by English language teachers in Jeddah city , Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Study topic is of great importance for me because of my academic background and my nationality.

It's difficult to make the transition to a fully automated learning environment that depends on the utilization of education technology in teaching English courses due to several reasons, obviously governmental school support by modern educational technologies (Zaylai.,2009). Moreover , there was a conservation and a limited use of technology if it was available in the schools , which could be interpreted by lack of experience and lack of technical support . further research studies is required to investigate these barriers clearly  (Al-Asmari., 2005) .

Thus , the modest goal of this study is to gather and collect more information using the quantitative approach , to achieve better understanding about the availability and utilization of educational technologies , and investigate to what extent the modern technologies are present and their utilization extent in teaching English language teaching in boys' elementary schools in Jeddah city .

LITERATURE REVIEW

In the last four decades, the utilization and development of educational technologies has been expanded enormously ( Hasanzadeh.,2012 ) . Several studies have investigated the availability and utilization of education technology in the teaching process.

A study conducted by Abuhamid (2006) aimed to investigate the availability of educational technologies in the elementary schools in Riyadh city , Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , had revealed that old educational technologies were more available and dominant over the modern educational technologies in the elementary schools .

In my view, this could be due to the lack of governmental support to the elementary schools, and could be attributed as well to decision makers attitudes and conservation towards modern education technology integration in elementary schools ( Aabuhamid.,2006) .

Another study conducted by Al-Shahrani (2011) , found that old educational technologies are the available and utilized forms of technology in the teaching process in boys secondary schools in Asir region and specific modern technologies were available but not utilized . these old technologies included videotapes and whiteboards .  In my view , this could be due to lack of maintainance of modern technology and lack of training experience .

Significance of the study

This study is significant due to many reasons; these reasons could be summarized as following:

1. There are few studies that examined the availability and utilization of educational technology in English classes in Saudi elementary schools .

2. Research that focuses on English language teachers is limited regarding education technology utilization in teaching process.

3. Current study will achieve better understanding of education technology availability and utilization in Saudi Arabia elementary schools, especially among English language classes.

4. This study will help the ministry of education and educational institutions to improve the efficient utilization of education technology in English language teaching .

5. This study will provide the ministry of education with important information regarding the obstacles and barriers to the utilization of educational technologies in English language teaching process.

Research questions

Current study is addressing specific questions regarding old and modern educational technologies availability and utilization in English language classes in boys' elementary schools in Jeddah city . These questions are as following :

1. To what extent old and modern educational technologies are available in English language classes in elementary schools in Jeddah city ?

2. What are the utilized educational technologies in English language classes in boys elementary schools in Jeddah city ?

3. To what extent the available educational technologies are used in teaching English language in boys' elementary schools in Jeddah city?

4. What is the relationship between specific demographic factors, such as qualifications, training experience, and years of experience , to the utilization of educational technology ?

5. What are the skills required by English language teachers to utilize educational technology, and how they acquire these skills?

6. What is the importance of educational technology utilization in teaching English in boys' elementary schools throughout Jeddah city ?

Research Methodology

This study aims to investigate the extent of , barriers to utilize , and availability of educational technologies for teaching English in elementary schools in Jeddah city . Quantitative approach is represented by a questionnaire that will be used in this study, where respondents will answer questions that are related to the availability and utilization of education technology in English language classes in boys' elementary schools in Jeddah city.

This chapter discusses the design of the study methodology, research tools description, data collection procedure, data analysis and ethical considerations.

Ethical considerations

1. Administrative approvals are requested from authorities and decision makers to facilitate research mission.

2. Written cover page is included with the research questionnaire explaining the purpose of the study.

3. Notify the respondents with the confidentiality of the collected data.

Limitations of the study

The study has a number of limitations.

1. It pays attention on the city of Jeddah and ignores the other major cities in Saudi Arabia such as Riyadh and Dammam.

2. Study is restricted with elementary schools, and so ignores other educational stages

3. Current study examines only boys' elementary schools, and so has nothing to say about f classes.

Expected results

This chapter presents the expected findings derived from the questionnaire that will be administered across 25 elementary schools in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in the second half of 2016.

Expected results regarding Methods of acquiring skills in the use of educational technology

The questionnaire asks the teachers about how they acquired the skills that they perceived they possessed in using educational technology. I expect that majority of the teachers will respond having previous experience in education technology utilization through training courses offered by the Ministry Of Education (MOE)

Expected results regarding Availability of technology

For the first set of questions, about the availability of types of educational technology,  I expect that findings the findings will point to the limited availability of education technology in elementary schools

Using technology

The next question to be investigated is the extent to which English language teachers utilized the various types of educational technology available to them for educational activities. I expect that whiteboards and videotapes will be the most utilized educational technologies in teaching English courses in the elementary schools in Jeddah city.
