Glass Barriers
Starting at a young age, people are usually taught what is right and what is wrong for their sex. For example, most parents associate dolls for girls and action figures for boys. Gender roles has greatly changed overtime since the early years, sexism has reached it limit, men and women should not live their lives being mistreated and taken advantage of. Sexism is a discrimination based on a person's sex or gender. People who are involved in sexism are called sexist.
Sexual harassment is one of many forms of sexism. Sexual harassment can happen anywhere at anytime to both men and women. Most people would associate rape with females but statistics show that 3% of american men have been raped, also 1 of 10 rape victims have been men (victims). Both men and women are hesitant to report a rape due to the fact that people may think they are lying, it makes them look weak or that the rapist will come after them. Society has created an image for men and that is that they should not be emotional or feminine and that they should always be the strong one. Whenever men are emotional or act 'feminine' they are considered weak. Even in the workforce men are expected to be big and broad and have control over everything. Women have a hard time being accepted at certain jobs.
For a physical job a man will most likely get the job over a women due to physical appearance because some people look at women as weaker and are only good for sexual appearances. Women in the workforce also struggle to get equal amounts pay to a man. 'American women who work full time, year round are paid only 79 cents for every dollar paid to men.(equal)' Sexism is commonly prominent in the work force. Sometimes pregnant women are denied a job because they are carrying. Often working pregnant women will be forced to have a sick leave instead of a maternity leave. When new fathers ask off for paternity leave sometime they do not get it. During that time it very important for newborns to create a bond with both parents. Sexism has played a huge role in our government ever since the early years. Hillary Clinton broke that glass ceiling in our government system by running for president. She has spent years fight for equality and breaking that glass ceiling. The result of Hillary Clinton running for president is that some men are not voting for her simply because she is a women. A glass ceiling is 'an upper limit to professional advancement, especially as imposed upon women, that is not openly acknowledged.(glass)'
From workforce to religion, men seem to have more freedom than women. Lack of faith is also a contributing factor to sexism. In some religious cultures women are only allowed to wear certain attire, if not they are looked down on or punished. Women are held to higher standards than men. Most men have more freedom in what they can wear for religious purposes. Even kids experience sexism at an early age. Society finds it more acceptable for a girl to dress masculine but disapproves when a boy wants to dress feminine. People of all ages and sizes experience sexism and it makes people hide who they really are. People are generally more lenient towards men and boys. Brothers and sisters are treated different because girls are considered more 'weak' or more 'prone to mistakes.' Some parents often overlook that fact that their kids may feel mistreated and feel unfair because of sexism. People grow up learning how they feel has their family express their opinions. Some people think women should always stay home and take care of the men in their lives. Some people grow up learning that women have the same rights as men and can do anything she wants. Some people even think that it not right for a man to stay at home and take care of his family, that men should be providing for the house and working all day. Both men and women have the right to do what they please with their lives.
Sexism still exist today, all the time, everyday; to many different people, but has changed a great amount in the years. Little factor to change people's opinion on gender roles will always be a huge benefit. Just by ignoring the stereotypes and stop judging people will slowly create an equal society.
