I realize that teachers hold a great message starting with giving knowledge, and ending with educating the coming generations morally and intellectually, so I chose to be an English teacher. I have a desire to change many concepts about education in students, teachers, administrators and people minds; it is important for me to correct every mistake that any teacher may do especially which I had noticed while I was a student. One of my objectives also is ‘to revive the Arabic Islamic heritage and achieve national unity, solidarity and independence through respect for the society's achievements and cultural heritage.’ and ‘to modernize Omani society by teaching the required technical skills and proper intellectual approaches to face the challenges of changing world where technology and new invention are widely spreading in all aspects of life.’ Furthermore, I am thinking about new and modern strategies are used in teaching English that can develop the Omani students’ level in this important subject while the level is low generally, and this social and educational progress will increase the national income, thus it will help me reciprocating what my family and country have given me.
I always believe that it is very important for teachers to have ethics as well as giving information; Prophet Muhammad PBUH said: ‘Allah and His angels and the people of the heavens and the earth, even the ants in their rocks and the fish, pry for blessings on those who teach people good.’ I must not embarrass any student front of the rest of class, but instead, become more friendly and kind towards students, do not hurt them or even refuse their ideas and suggestions, so the class would be the place of sharing knowledge mutually. Moreover, I must be totally fair and never discriminate between students according to their social levels, religious backgrounds and mental levels. Therefore, being that fair makes me apply one of the important values of citizenship. Naturally, students need who cares about them psychology, socially and scholastically; and this is the function of the teacher, teaching is not only about conveying information, but about caring and understanding the students’ needs. Therefore, what makes teachers good is being helpful and supportive. The most important value that every teacher must have is being aware of the subject he/she presents for students.
It is always said that every teacher should change and vary his/her ways and tools he/she uses in teaching pupils because they will be bored if the tools are the same or confused if the teacher does not know what suitable tools should be used in any aspect of the subject. Stories, magazines, books and web pages are what will help me improve my students’ reading skill. In addition, Because of the importance of the modernity convoy, using technology is very important for me in teaching students; watching educational English movies and listening to educational songs will be good ideas to improve my students’ pronunciation, vocabulary, speaking and listening skills, also using applications and programs like PowerPoint, websites and English teaching programs will add fun in the class as well as learning. Moreover, I will give them indoor and outdoor, individual and non-individual activities and practice tests preparing for the coming quizzes. Furthermore, I will prepare games encouraging them memorize the vocabulary and plays to enhance their fluency and confidence.
Teachers must have various methods teaching the students to convey the benefit to them. I am always thinking about the methods I will use, and telling stories is one of many methods. It teaches them morals and values which can stuck in their minds and affect their life. Their knowledge will be extended with new information about nations, historical events, great people, and many things will be concluded in these stories. I will also give them different issues to talk about in a debate that gives them confidence to speak and argue in different issues which will extend their knowledge and help them accepting diversity of people’s thoughts, beliefs and opinions. It teaches them the ethics of dialogue and how to respect the opposite. In addition, I think writing diaries is a good method too because it will give me a good chance monitoring my students’ progress in writing. I will also recognize their personalities more than ever before as they will express their feelings and opinions or even their problems, so I can be closer to them.
Moving to the role of the teacher, I will be a lecturer, who stands and tries her best to deliver the information to the pupil. In addition, I will be facilitator of learning, providing students with the information and tools they need to master a subject. At times, I will act like a tutor, working with small groups of students or individual students within the classroom or after class. I will also play the role of evaluator, constantly assessing students' abilities through formal and informal assessments, providing suggestions for improvement and assigning grades. Perhaps the most important roles teachers fill involve interacting with students. I must be the leader in the classroom and in the school, earning the respect of students and setting a positive example. I must be disciplinarian, doling out fair and consistent punishments to students who break the rules. I must show care and concern for students. I have the power to build up or tear down a student's self-esteem and make a student's day or ruin it in an instant.
It is very important for me as a teacher to make my students Recognize that teaching and teachers are central to student engagement. Keeping up with the educational research through involvement in professional development activities (reading journals, 3 attending workshops or webinars ‘etc) is key for teachers to remain current in the field using effective, research-based strategies, and techniques. Moreover, I have to insure that the classroom environment is welcoming to students from all cultures. To be engaged, students need to feel that they are in an environment where they are accepted and affirmed. In addition, I will enhance students’ self-belief. Research shows that students engage when they act as their own learning agents working to achieve goals important to them. They must believe they can learn and know how to deal with failures and learn from those experiences. What is more, it is great to create learning opportunities that are active, collaborative, and promote learning relationships. Active learning in groups, peer relationships, and social skills are key components to engagement and motivation.
The good teacher should have a specific ways in which he/she manage the students in the classroom, so as a teacher, I will manage my classroom through writing down my rules; what they should do within the semester, the tasks, activities and homework and tell students how their grades will be determined. I will also give my students the chance suggesting rules. In addition, I will reward more than punish, the point, though, is that students should be rewarded for good behavior. The reward for an effective class without behavior distractions might be no homework or creating a fun game that might help students learn more than they would during a traditional class. Praise is also important. Only hearing the negative is counterproductive. Moreover, it is very important to encourage my students asking questions without being shy or afraid; I will make it crystal clear that students can’and should’ask questions at any time. The printed rules should specify what students need to do to ask questions. Generally, students need to raise their hands.
