ROV stands for remotely-operated-vehicle.  ROVs were designed for military use to gaze over mountains to spot enemy trouble but they were also introduced and adopted by the offshore energy industries to support deepwater operations in the mid-1970s. ROVs were first mainly used by the navy to conduct various tasks. Today they are not only used by the navy but also in aquaculture, salvage diving, environmental research, shipping, and underwater discovery. Over the decade’s marine scientist have been using ROVs to gather data and samples of deep-sea data. They are also used by the oil and energy industry to reduce pollution and check underwater infrastructure. Industries love ROVs so much because they are easy to use and cheap. On top of that, they are also able to deploy quickly, require little maintenance and are small. They can resist much higher pressures than people and don’t have the need to breath allowing them to stay under for extended periods of time. Without the ROVs, it would be more difficult to collect detailed information on what’s going on underwater. ROVs have been helping for the last few decades to understand more about the ocean explore many possible uses.

There is four specific class of ROVs that the offshore energy industry uses. The first one is the Work class ROV, this ROV is used to explore the ocean floors that aren’t safe for divers to reach. This type of ROV is also used in energy projects and deep archaeological investigations. The second class of ROV is the light work class ROV, this ROV is often deployed from ships with divers and is often used for inspections to make repairs or hold add-ons like laser scanners, sensors. The third ROV is the observation class ROV, which used to explore small bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and coastal waters. one major use of this ROV is to test the water quality and to check for safety before the diver dives. The fourth ROV is the Micro or Mini ROV, this ROV is the smallest of its kind it’s capable to fit in a pipe to get an idea of how small it is. It’s mostly used to insect areas that are hard to reach such as a pipe or submerged infrastructure.

ROV’s have shaped many policies that have already been set in motion or are in the process of being set in motion in our ocean’s. One specific way they can do that if the ROV has the ability to pick up trash and other harming object and or liquids from the surface of the ocean and objects suspended within the water. This helps the community with littering problem and collecting data on the location where the littering is abundant. Say if the ROV finds that there is a high the amount of trash in a coastal city. Using this information, it may encourage the city to want to resolve the issue by maybe placing signs and providing more accessibility to trash cans and or recycling bins. The growth of the ROV could improve the policy on biodegradable containers and bags. The policies that can be shaped by ROV development would allow people to see how the animals and environment are affected by their actions. The data and visuals could provide a window for the common citizens to see the damage the coastal communities are causing to wildlife and the ocean ecosystem. ROVs are  Results of ROV development will set policies in motions that will improve the conditions of the oceans and those that live in them.

The impact of the ROV is significant and goes unnoticed due to the secrecy behind them. Although ROVs have been around for a long time, they mostly have been shrouded in mystery due to the nature of them. For example, in the 1980’s the U.S was working with contracts in creating ROVs and getting pilots for them. Then in 1985, Robert Ballard was assigned a secret mission to recover submarines that contained atomic missiles. Once the mission was over Ballard had extra time to use the new ROV and with its technology, Ballard was able to find the wreckage of the Titanic. The finding of the wreckage was a significant contribution to the societal culture as it allowed people to think of the stories that could have happened. One example is James Cameron’s Titanic, this would not have been made without the wreckage as the wreckage was able to define how the ship sank and with that knowledge a movie was made. The ROV impacted society by finding the wreckage and causing society to speculate the sinking without the witnesses. Another impact ROVs have is the ability to go deep underwater where the pressure is very strong. Normally, in a Human Controlled Vehicle, the cabin would be pressurized for human conditions, however, with ROVs, the pressure only needs to be enough for wires and other systems in the ROV. This means that it is more common to use as it just requires a pilot. With this, the size of the ROV does not matter and will allow humans to access areas that previously were inaccessible due to size. This doesn’t seem like much, but it has lead to some cave systems being found and sometimes other species in there. With discoveries such as cave systems and species, they inspire writers to create novels and stories in which impact society by giving it a new perspective in life. ROVs indirectly impacts society as ROVs are usually used for scientific purposes or missions. However, when used they inspire others to do works of fiction or nonfiction, which in turn influences society to develop new ideas or expand on old ones. Although ROVs have just been used for missions, the discoveries they make is what impacts the society. It’s the discovery of a wreckage that let society understand what happened to a ship, it’s the discovery of otherworldly species in our own oceans that inspire writers to create books that influence the society that reads it. In the ROVs greatly impact the society in which it is built for, even though it goes unnoticed most of the time.

Over the years the ROV has had a significant impact on the ocean industries the discoveries and research produced by their development as lead to me new discoveries they will continue to Bro and will stab Lish more policies to better efficiency in different areas of work.
