Science Experiment

Introduction:

Metal is one of the most used, and one of the most important materials used today. Metals are more denser than most elements because they are malleable an ductile. Metal is used in society today as bridges, utensils, houses, plates, and parts for vehicles to function. Metal is used for these tasks as it is a very strong material. Metals are very strong in todays society due to the metals high density, malleable so that it can be changed in different shapes or a size, ductile, and are great heat conductors. If metal is not carefully looked after or doesn’t have coating protection corrosion may occur and could affect the material in many ways

Corrosion on metals is when a metal or steels material is getting damaged and then begins to rust. This is because of the pH value, temperature, oxygen, chloride, and sulphide. Chemical corrosion affects metal and steel when the surface of them get react to substances. This causes the metals ions too dissolve if it is in a moisture filled environment. This then leads to corrosion as the ions of the metal is freed and forms hydrous oxides. Corrosion can occur faster when the metal is exposed to the environment around  it. An example of corrosion occurring faster would be if it was sitting in salt water due to the salt as an electrolyte which then increase the pace of corrosion. Corrosion can be prevented from metal be non-corrosive such as stainless steel, and aluminium or anti corroding coat to paint the metals.

The problem of corrosion to society today is the prices, and the loss of resources and plant shutdowns. Corrosion occurs in nearly everywhere after metal has been used due to the environment it is exposed too. This causes a worldwide problem due to the waste of materials, loss of product, and maintience repair. In todays society, people have tried and managed to create new ways to handle metals corrosion and prevent by being tested and seeing the best way to prevent a corrosion. This can be such as the metals corrosion being slowed down or even managed by coatings, corrosion inhibitors, an environmental modifications. These developments have helped society by decreasing or even stopping at the pace of how metal generally corrodes due to what environment they are being exposed too.In my investigation I will see record and see what nail will corrode the most out of 3 chosen substances and controlled.

This investigation will record an observe what liquid substance will cause the nails to corrode the most and then record and see why it happened out of each substance. The results and observations will be achieved by leaving the nails in each substance and then record the results. an account of what you hope to find When recording the results, I hope to find that the salt water will corrode the most as it has the most dissociated ions which can cause a faster corrosion in metals. This will allow the data and observations to discuss how and what each substance did the the nail.

Aim:

The aim of this experiment is to investigate the different effects of how different solutions will effect the corrosion of a nail to determine which solution best prevents corrosion.

Hypothesis:

It is expected that the nail left in coke will prevent corrosion more than the other solutions because corrosion occurs when there is a lot of oxygen in the substance and salt water and tap water has a lot of oxygen, where as coke only has a small amount.

Materials:

4x Iron Nails

4x Plastic Cups

150mL Salt water

150mL Vinegar

150mL Coke

Risk Assessment:

Method:

All four nails were weighed and recorded.

150mL of three different types of solutions were placed into a plastic cup.

The 4 nails were placed into each solution and were stored away.

The nails were then observed after 2 weeks of sitting in the solution.

The nails surface corrosion was removed from the nail and the nail was weighed again.

Refinement Paragraph:

Step 1, all four nails were weighed and recorded for a more accurate outcome instead on only one nail being weighed. Step 2, three cups were had each solution of 150mL poured into them such as Vinegar, salt water, an coke. Step 3, the 4 nails have been placed into each cp and were stored safely wit group numbers on them for 2 weeks. Step 4, the nails were then observed after 2 weeks the nails sitting in the solutions. Step 5, The nails surface corrosion was removed from the nail and the nail was weighed again to record observations.

Discussion

The results show that corrosion will occur more readily in vinegar. In table 1, it shows that the vinegar had the most difference in mass. *Not completed yet.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this investigation had showed that vinegar had took more mass off the nail because vinegar is acidic and is why the vinegar did not corrode the nail as much as the salt water but the vinegar dissolve the nail more. The salt water nail looked more rusted as it was a very good conductor.
