You’re swiping through your Spotify or Apple, looking for new music to listen and vibe to. Suddenly, you find this one album with a red background and three guys dripped out in black suits, ice (jewelry) on their necks, and clout goggles. That’s right chief- Culture Two by the Migos. The albums alright (I’m kidding, it’s mediocre at best), which prompts you into looking at the group’s older projects. You listen to their previous mixtapes and albums. They’re fire.
Now slow down buckaroo, who even are the Migos anyways? Well, the Migos are a hip hop group that consists of three artists: Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff. The three of them all possess distinct and unique roles, traits, and personalities, which are all going to be explained in the following paragraphs. However, here’s the catch- while researching and going over what will be written throughout the essay, it came to me that all three members show qualities that can be easily related to. Thus brings us to the mission of the essay, which is to connect us all to the Migos that we have in ourselves. In addition, the Migos are like the Muppet theory of the hip-hop world. They need each other to thrive, which will be explained later. Let’s get crackalackin.
First, let’s look at the one who started the Migos and brought them together first:
Quavo. Quavo is the leader of the team, the “head huncho” per say. As mentioned before, he’s the one who’s responsible for the trio forming in the first place (he started the group in High School). He keeps his fellow group mates in check and makes sure they do their jobs. Skill wise, he’s the most well-rounded of the three, which is most likely why they kept him as their leader. He is great on the hooks of the songs and is fairly decent in other attributes such as lyrics and flow, however, he doesn’t really stand out in any field. He has the most distinct personality which stems from his role as the top dog in the group. He knows how to get interviews going by being the most talkative of the group, and he possesses the swagger and healthy dose of cockiness that all leaders need.
As you may have guessed, naturally-born leaders most relate to Quavo. This type of person possesses similar qualities as Quavo does, such as the ability to direct a crowd into doing their jobs and the ability to keep others in check. Referring back to the Muppet Theory, I believe it is essential that we have Quavo Muppets (if you will) in our lives to keep balance within our relationships, jobs, etc. They keep the show running and are the glue that keeps things from falling apart. Him being so well-rounded can also inspire natural leaders to try in the best of their ability to find balance in their lives, which can help them in being role model and guide. Overall, Quavo is the Head Honcho of the group and helps the Migos thrive through his leadership just as natural leaders do.
Now let’s examine Offset, the second member of the trio. Offset presents himself as the “tough guy” in the group without expressing it through words. He really just sets off (pun intended) as one that would go through hell and back just to defend, back up, or stand up for his family. The thing is, he’s quiet. He’s lowkey. Very lowkey at that. To make it known that he’s the guardian of the group without really saying much while not being the the leader of the team is so surprising and shows how capable he is of being a good teammate. Now to his skillset, he’s really the smoothest member of the group. He has the best flow, which means that he can lend the beat with his voice extremely well. In other words, he really just delivers his lines the better than his two counterparts.
Onto how listeners relate to him, he thrives to be the one that has his friends’ backs, no matter what. He’s the one that would go to war on someone that puts down his brothers. This is a key must for us all, as we all should have the same spark in us that Set does. Within our relationships, we must always have the same intensity to provide aid to our friends which is why, to me, Offset is the most valuable of the group. Without that intensity, bonds would not nearly be as strong because the care needed for a healthy relationship would not be present. In Muppet theory terms, all friendships need an Offset Muppet in order to assure that those involved truly cares for the others. All in all, Offset is the quiet tough guy who stands up for those he loves that we all should to mold ourselves after in order to achieve the best relationship possible.
Lastly, we investigate the entity known as Takeoff. Honestly, Takeoff’s my favorite. Even though he is essentially the follower and acts through and behind the influence of his peers, I feel like he is the most relatable Migo (personality-wise) solely because of that, which I will explain in the Muppet section of the current analysis. Anyways, just like Offset, Takeoff’s pretty quiet. However, when he feels like it, he becomes extremely outgoing and can easily take over (take offer) the interview or talk. He’s the most intelligent of the group, as he is the best lyricist and writer. In addition to this, he has the best voice of the group, meaning to me, he‘s the most intriguing one to listen to. He really let his name be known in Commando, a Migos track up from 2016 that he completely spazzed (went off) on. Back to the point, what sets him off the most is his style. Quavo and Offset can both be simplistic and repetitive with their lyrics at times, which is completely fine. But Takeoff, in every song, brings a unique flow mixed with creative lyrics, which (also at times) can be the polar opposite of his counterparts which is exactly why I like him so much.
As I have explained before, I feel like Takeoff is the most relatable member of the bunch because of his follower attitude. The majority of us all identify as people who let others take over the reigns and guides us, which is perfectly fine. Nobody has to be a natural leader/Quavo Muppet. It perfectly aligns with the Muppet Theory because Quavo Muppets need individuals to guide in order to fulfill their role as Offset Muppets need friends to protect and watch after. The three Migo Muppets need each other to thrive, as their everyday counterparts do. Altogether, Takeoff is the quiet-yet-outgoing, lyrical follower that helps his mates find and achieve their roles.
There y’all have it. The Migos, their roles, and how they relate to us in our everyday lives. As explained before, the Migos Theory is the rapper equivalent to the Muppet Theory because we can all relate with and identify to a certain member of the Migos, and we all need the other two Migos in order to thrive and have healthy relationships. A quick run through of the three- Quavo is the natural and outspoken leader, Offset is the quiet bodyguard that gets his mates’ backs, and Takeoff is the quiet follower that can still manage to steal the show. I hope you, the reader, are able to find yourself in the superstar trio and are able to relate to them. That is all.
