number legislations Working in a garage Working in a machine shop
1 PPE It is important workers know how to correctly use safety equipment we supply the workers with the correct safety gear needed such as:
-Protective overalls, this is to ensure no chemicals etc. get in contact with skin.
-Face screens and safety goggles, stop objects getting in your eyes and to protect your face agents lights form welding for example.
-Hard hats, this is to help limit the damage of anything hitting you on the head.
-Gloves, this is to help grip objects and to stop a person burning their hands and block contact to the skin.
-Steal toe cap bots, prevent anything braking your toes in the work place
Furthermore PPE should be cleaned correctly. In a factory workers can be dealing with more complex machines, this means there can be a more dangerous variety of chemicals and machines this requires better PPE. such as:
-protective overalls, chemical overalls
-face screens, goggles, visors
-chemical gloves and normal gloves
-safety boots with steal caps, penetration resistant
-breathing apparatus, helps breathing when using gasses or tiny metal fragments stops it entering your lungs. They must use the correct filters.
-Ear protectors, help protect your ears from problems in the future
2 Manual handling Manual handling relates to the movement of items either by lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing or pulling. In the automotive repair industry employees are given tools to limit the amount of manual handling they have to do such as:
-car lift
-car jack
-tool trolley (on wheels)
-trollies In a factory work place there are a lot of heavy goods certain tools can help aid you in manual handling in this work place such as:
-hand trucks (sack trucks)
-pallet trucks
-platform trucks
-containers
-barrel trucks
-stacking frames
-pallet trucks
3 COSHH Lots of cleaning agents can be hazardous to your health, COSHH in the automotive workplace is very important, harsh chemicals that they use for brakes and engine liquids can be irritant. These can be things such as: engine fumes that you breath in also things like,
Gases and fumes from welding, soldering, and cutting. In a factory environment COSHH is very important because you would use it a lot, from soldering, welding, chemical fumes, abasing, cutting, grinding, COSHH to control these hazards measures must be taken to control these substances.
4 RIDDOR In any working environment workers must report all injury’s to the supervisor. Workers should report:
-deaths and injuries at work.
-diseases
-dangerous occurrences
-trips, slips, falls
-gas incidents
-mechanical faults with the automobiles
-any public injury caused by or in workplace
Etc.
All injury’s should be reported to the supervisor, they will then take actions further and carry out an investigation. This applies for the other work places too—— In the factory environment workers should report everything what is written on the left of this paragraph and also:
-gas leaks
-chemical leaks
-faulty machinery
-major injury’s
-broken bones
-injury requiring hospital treatment.
Etc.
P2) what are the roles and responsibilities of employers, employees and the public?
The responsibilities of employers:
All employers are responsible for health and safety; they must provide health and safety for all members on their business they must ensure workers and the public are secure from anything that may cause them harm. Employers are required by law to follow up on any complaints made towards the health and safety of their business this means thy must carry out routine safety checks and risk assessments.
Employers must inform workers on the risks that come with the job informing them on the risks they may have to take. They must train you on how to manage any risk and how to deal with an emergency.
They must provide a formal health and safety policy that workers must follow. Furthermore hear is a list of stuff they must do by law:
– Provide a safe and clean place to work.
– Provide a Safe equipment with no faults
– Take routine safety checks on the equipment
– Provide PPE
– Emergency plans and emergency exits
– Lectures advising workers on the current legislations
– General safety policy
– All materials that will be used are stored safely
– They must have a first aid kit or room.
– Provide manual handling equipment.
– They must make sure the work place is well ventilated
– They must make sure the work place is well lit.
– Designated area for rest brakes and must provide a rest break 1 hour for every 3 hours working.
– Allow holiday brakes
– Etc.
The responsibilities of employees:
As an employee you should be allowed to voice your concerns about health and safety without any back lash. Employees should have PPE if you do not have this then you should quickly tell your supervisor. You should look out for yourself and make sure you will be safe in this environment and make sure you can actually deal with the responsibilities that come with that job.
If you do have concerns about your job you should discuss them with your employer, if in your work place there is someone that deals with these complaints the speak to them. If you don’t feel up to doing this you can ring the health and safety help line which you can find on the internet.
You must use the PPE your employer provides you, if you don’t feel safe enough and require more PPE or feel like it will put your safety at risk even more then consult with your employer if it feels big or too small then ask for smaller PPE.
There are some other things too these are:
– Take care not to put other workers or the public in danger.
– To talk to your employer
– Make sure you feel correctly trained
– Make sure you follow the regulations and keep up with the current ones.
– Not to miss use any equipment that is provided to you.
– Report your injuries, or any illnesses you may have because of your job.
– Etc.
The responsibilities of the public in the work place.
The public have the responsibility of telling the employer of the business about their accident or if they feel un-easy in the work place.
They have a responsibility of when entering the work place to have some basic PPE on however they do not have to wear them if the employer has a safe designated room for meeting the customers.
They can legally attempt to claim for their accident, but if it is a major accident then the company must provide some compensation.
M1) what happens to the employers and employees if they don’t follow the current legislations.
The employers must take full responsibility of any work place accidents that occur on their premises/company. employers must manage any risks the employees bring to them and all the other requirement’s that I have stated above. If they do not do this they can face a lot of consequences such as fines, imprisonment and disqualification
If you voice your opinion your employer and they do not listen then you should ring the health and safety help line which
you can find online, however you can also contact the HSENI inspectors they can then take your request from there and inspect it further to see if applies with the critera
Most employers take out liability insurance to cover them self and workers in case of any accidents that occur. if a serious injury happens then the company is at fault this will mean the employer is at fault for not teaching the workers how to follow health and safety correctly or not providing safe equipment.
The employers should have insurance as of the (employer’s liability compulsory insurance of 1969) if an accident occurs and it is found the employer does not have this they will be fined for this or have to pay what the insurance would normally cover anything up to £5,000,000.
However the employee could sue for civil law asking for more money and this could rack up the bill a lot too ending in the business going bankrupt.
If the employer knows of a health and safety hazard and do not deals with it they can be charged with criminal negligence this can lead to the manager going to prison
Now and again the HSE come round to businesses to check they are following health and safety protocol if they find anything wrong with the site they will (depending on the seriousness of the danger) issue a warning, close the area off or make it so the equipment will not be used, if they issue a warning they will be back in a couple weeks when they say to have it fixed by to check it again, if it still isn’t fixed they can issue a fine or issue another warning, the HSE can take equipment to check if it is working correctly too, if the manager won’t let them in they will come back to the business with the police and a warrant to enter the premises.
