Attention span is when a student gives attention to a lesson or designated task. This is important for students to have as they can focus more and learn more if they have long attention spans. If they get distracted too often they might end up getting low grades. Some reasons why students have a hard time paying attention are lack of motivation, too many distractions (such as social media or games), disorganization, or not getting proper sleep or nutrition. Long attention spans are mostly in older students than in younger ones. Older students focus more and give more attention unlike younger students that can easily get distracted.

Ways to prevent this from happening is challenging your child for them to have a motive in studying properly and efforting on things they do. It is also good to keep distractions aways at school hours to make sure they give all their attention to studying. Make sure they get enough rest and have their meals at the right time. Help them in the simplest ways to be organized with school work and projects.
The students attention span has been a big problem of teachers and parents even before Covid- 19 started. Learners attention span starts to wane from 10-20 minutes during discussions. Neuropsychologist said that our brain is not designed to learn from screen but it is designed to learn from the environment and human interaction. There are 2 strategies that people have provided that may help the teachers to gain the students attention span, these are “Active Learning” and “Active Listening”. Active Learning is a broad range of teaching that engage students to participate during their class time. Active Listening is the process of listening attentively while discussions and reflecting back what the teacher said. When students practice these two strategies this means they give their full attention on the class.

It is natural for a student’s attention span to vary according to their mood, motivation, health, and other factors. A typical student’s attention span is about 10-15 minutes long, yet most of the classes last for 30 minutes or an hour. Why is our generations attention span so short?

Many factors influence our attention span, and one of them, according to the citation above, is social media. It has had such an impact on humans that the average human attention span has decreased from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds in 2013. The length of a person’s attention span is determined by their age, the work at hand, and the environment in which they find themselves. Students can take control of their own learning process, not only in school but in every aspect of their lives.
