WEEK 3
Pre-discussion Activity
The value of studying English and American literature in basic education is that they can learn something from writers since then until now. It is essential for a student to at least name and remember few works that can give them life-learning. It’s not just about reading, writing, or knowing, it’s about comprehending works and author’ s expression of emotions and wisdom. I believe that there is something in literature that you cannot just learn by studying but by reading the words and in between the lines. English literature has an impact of advanced development during the old times while American literature can relate Filipino students who are also living in a democratic country. Classics works and authors are set as founding discoverers of knowledge and enlightenment that can be passed on by reading their works.
During-discussion Activity
What do you think are the essential practices that literature teaching in the Philippines lack on?
Practices such as first-hand learning experiences lack on our country’s ways of teaching literature. There are thousands of great books and works written by authors around our country and around the world that will be appreciated more if students can see and experience them first-hand. Resources are an issue, yes, so I think budget for education must be focused on especially for students who are living on mountains or rural area. In addition, teachers with enough competency and knowledge are really needed in our education system.
Post-discussion Activity
What are the conventional/traditional standards in teaching literature to basic education? Do you think they are effective? Justify your YES or NO by providing a brief explanation.
There are four aspects and targets of teaching literature to basic education; listening; reading; writing; and speaking. In addition, reading, viewing, and listening comprehension, vocabulary development, literature, writing and composition, oral language and fluency, and grammar awareness. Conventional and traditional standards in teaching literature to basic education are the basis of the teachers to improvise, create, and develop strategies and activities for learners to learn and love literature more. Yes, I believe that they are effective because all my life, I haven’t done anything regularly to improve my skills for literature. I believe that I learned them from school and teachers’ teaching techniques. For instance, the activity of presenting monologue in front of the class is something I never learned at home and something I learned at presented at school. It is evidence that standards in teaching literature can help a student grow based on the learning outcomes the teacher wants to see after discussion and during activities.
What are the recent trends in teaching literature to basic education particularly in high school? Do you think they are effective? Justify your
YES or NO by providing a brief explanation.
Performance-based tasks are the most recent trend in teaching literature since it is part of the latest curriculum and it focuses on the learning of the students by performing a certain task. In addition, it is the learning activity or assessment that asks students to perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency. Yes, they are effective. I am one of the products of K-12 curriculum and I can say that there are many things that performance tasks taught me. In the act of learning, people obtain content knowledge, acquire skills, and develop work habits- and practice the application of all three to real world situations. Performance-based Learning and assessment represent a set of strategies for the acquisition and application of knowledge. English teachers must encourage students and apply techniques to help our students to understand the linguistic expression.
Self-evaluation Activity
How does the K-12 English Curriculum ensure that all students will appreciate reading literature?
K-12 English Curriculum includes all the intelligences for assessments and strategies in teaching literature. They clearly stated the goals and benefits of reading and harvesting knowledge from reading literature. Reading literature benefits both your physical and mental health, and those benefits can last a lifetime. They begin in early childhood and continue through the senior years. Here’s a brief explanation of how reading books can change your brain.
Why is it necessary that a language curriculum will not try to take away literature as its core?
It’s necessary that a language curriculum will not try to take away literature as its core because linguistics is different from literature. They have different goals and learning outcomes. The key difference between linguistics and literature is that linguistics refers to the systematic study of a language whereas literature can be defined as the study of written works within a language. Also, there are more things to learn aside from literature when it comes to studying language curriculum although both of them are built on the component of language as their main source. It’s important to be specific when it comes to language acquisition especially for us, teachers-to-be.
