Types of Animations
Movement
The movement Animation type is done on a frame by frame sequential bases. This is where each frame is slightly different to the one prior when collectively viewed one after the other comes across as a movement of an image forming a video. An example that best describes this is a flip book where each image is drawn on a sheet of paper and when quickly flipped through comes across as a movement clip. Traditionally a person would hand draw a picture on a surface that had a light underneath the person would place the next sheet of paper on top of the first and would be able to see the prior image whilst developing the new one this is knowns as Onion Skinning.

Animation in Advertising
Advertising can be found in many forms weather a poster in the train station or a TV advert they are all trying to sell you something, by means of positivity communication the features and benefits of a given service or good. All advertising has a goal and that is to increase the revenues of the business by positively promoting the product or service that is being offered.
Many businesses feel that animation allows them to create a more effective and snappy advert which gets to the point quicker thus allowing the audience to understand and gather information quickly and to not become bored or overcome with information.
Animation uses various techniques to articulate and communicate information, feeling and emotions. As shown in the Minions advert for ODEON the characters have shown different emotions which are portrayed on the facial expressions of the characters.
Minions ODEON Advert
The advert is appealing to young kids hence the characters being minions from a kid’s movie. There is no sound; this is due to the target audience being of an age where they do not fully understand English so it is unnecessary. Various facial expressions shown on the characters faces to visually communicate to the audience. Regarding festive period of Christmas hence the lights. Humour that makes the kids laugh that makes them have a more positive thought of the ad. One of the characters have a Christmas hat on that also makes young kids excited. There are various sound effects that make the audience understand the sorry line of the Ad. After some troubling circumstances that the characters fell into all was resolved by the end of the AD.
In my opinion this was a good advert that effectively promotes the ODEON cinema it uses a lot of techniques in order to achieve this and it was short and got to the point quick whilst also being humorous to the audience.
The Greatest Gift | Sainsbury's OFFICIAL Ad | Christmas 2016
In my opinion this was a terrible advert as the whole advert had not baring on Sainsbury’s. the advert was about the terrible life of the older man and how when it is Christmas it improved. The advert was long in length and would cause users to become bored and lose concentration. There was no element of anticipation. However, the animation shows and change in mood from the use of dull colours and brightness at the start to brighter colours and changed facial expressions on the charters faces.
Towards the end of the advert the main character decided that the ‘greatest gift his family could get is him’ but this has not association with Sainsbury’s and their business goals.
The advert did contain advanced lighting to portray the mood and emotions of the main character which was a good use of animations skills.
2017 Coco Pops Granola Advert
The Coco Pops advert in my opinion was successful as it uses effective animation skills to communicate to the audience that the product is a fun and tasty breakfast. It uses sound of the characters talking and agreeing with the monkey character that it is tasty and chocolaty. The advert starts with a group of characters attempting to get some coconuts of a tree but when the monkey character shows one of them the Cocopops it makes him get distracted and causes his team to fail getting the coconuts but they were satisfied with the Cocopops.
The advert would be appealing to young kids as they would find is funny and they would want the Cocopops as their breakfast as they are chocolaty which would be appealing to young kids as they would be it as a treat. The main aspect of what they are trying to promote is that the cereal is made of chocolate and when mixed with milk the milk also turns chocolaty which excites the audience being kids as chocolate is sweet and they see it as a treat being given chocolate.
Animation in Education
Animation is used in many forms one of these is educational use. A modern successful approach to the education industry is to gamify the educational process. Animations will be used in various forms to make the process of learning easier and engaging.
What are Algorithms? | BBC Bitesize
http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3whpv4
This animation is portraying the use of animation in education. This animation is to be used for young kids in KS1 to understand how Algorithms work. It also tries to convey the complexities of Algorithms when the robot did not understand the commands of the other character.
The animation is set in a very simple scene to avoid young kids getting distracted. To add understanding the scene is set in a bathroom which supports the context of the story line in which the robot assists the character in obtaining objects from his bathroom such as his toothbrush.
Let's Learn the Alphabet – Preschool Learning
This animation is for young kids and helps them learn the Alphabet. Later in the animation it also shows items that being with the letter, for example, for ‘a’ an Apple’s animated image was shown. This animation was also showing the kids how to write the letter and the structure of the letter. It added a slightly entertaining aspect to animating which was when they needed to go to the next letter in the alphabet the current letter would adapt into the next.
Learn Times Tables for Kids
The animation above teaches young kids how to learn their times tables. The animation has a good feature which graphically demonstrates progression. When the answer is given the squirrel further climbs the tree in ambition of the nut at the top. The animation is set in a very basic environment making it hard for the kids to get distracted and allowing them to focus.
Animation in Entertainment
Pac-Man
Pac-Man is a classic of the animated games which was first released in 1980. The animated game includes colour thus allowing it to better portray the game and animations such as, when the player eats the bigger balls all the monsters change colour to blue and they show a sad face which gives the player an upper hand as they are now able to eat the monsters.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG
Advantages and Disadvantages of Animated GIF’s
Animated GIF’s do not use a lot of storage so they are widely used without concerns of them occupying to much storage space. When sending these over online messaging platforms they will not consume a lot of bandwidth.
Animated GIF also has an additional benefit and that is that it can convey what is unable to be conveyed by just a single image. A GIF is like a short video and a video can make a situation more understandable than words or still images.
Another advantage of animated GIF is that the GIF file format uses lossless compression which means that the file size is reduced without losing too much quality.
Disadvantages include that GIF is an 8-bit file type so it only supports a limited range of colours. , which means that the GIF file type only allows 256 colours. This is a disadvantage as other file formats such as TIFF allow for 16 million colour variations.
A disadvantage of GIF is that although it uses considerably less storage space it does use more than text, so webpages will take longer to load on clients’ computer if GIF images are used.
Another disadvantage, is that GIF is an 8-bit file format and may appear pixelated which shows the poor limited quality the file format is able to render.
