Hello, my name is Rxxxxx Dxxxxx and today I will be discussing a leader in the entertainment industry who shows great leadership while also inspiring others with her business, its success/growth and her personal brand efforts through media and creativity. Looking for a person who fits the qualifications of a great leader and business professional is surprisingly hard depending on how you define being an effective leader. During my thought process, I discovered an inspirational young woman who fits Maxwell’s leadership style instead of Greene’s. She is a great leader, creator and role model to her company and her fans. Kylie Jenner.
Growing up, I was inspired to be creative in various crafts and things that I loved to do. Something she loved was make up but her insecurities of her lips had her question her passion. In November of 2015 she launched her brand Kylie Lip Kits which was later changed to Kylie Cosmetics in February of 2016.
Ms.Jenner had her company for just under three years when her company’s value was estimated to be over $900 million by Forbes. She created her company based on the inspiration of her biggest insecurity which was her lips. Her first 15,000 lip kits were funded by herself at the cost of $250.000 from previous job earnings.
When her lip kits first premiered she was sold out in under a minute. By February, production was increased to 500,000 lip kits. By the end of 2016 her total revenue was $307 million with the lip kits costing $29 each. In her first 18 months, the company generated $420,000 million in revenue.
What are some of the general leadership qualities of Kylie Jenner? She communicates with her teams and her fans/ customers to achieve results. He builds only on her specific brand while having a go-getter attitude. He has the ability of taking her thoughts and putting them to action.
This type of of leadership is exactly the type to resemble Maxwell’s type of leadership. Something that Maxwell discusses in his book is how to be successful while also growing as people. Kylie took an idea and ran with it while doing everything she can to make sure that everything is running smoothly from start to finish and correcting anything wrong that happens.
Kylie Jenner knows that her fans are generally the people who buy her products and parents of her fans. With that being said she keeps quick customer service to people who have bought her products and also keeps her social media page updated constantly with new products and the way and swatches of the colors so people get an idea of the make up that will be to come.
A quote from John Maxwell related to these traits of leadership would be There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. ‘Good pride’ represents our dignity and self-respect. ‘Bad pride’ is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.” With this being said, you must find the balance.
Another quote from John Maxwell that relates to his leadership is “Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them.” What this means it’s good to be on the level of your followers so that they can see that you are like them but at the same time find the balance that lets you inspire them.
During the beginning of her company there were issues with certain products with shipments and little things along those lines .Kylie read the messages from her fans and rectified the situation and made sure that everyone had gotten what they had ordered.
Today, Kylie has expanded her brand from her original insecurity and has branched out to other ideas, such as eye shadow, eye liner, highlighters and more. With a variety of fun colors and names you can’t go wrong. There are launches through out the year and they send you the dates via email list and social media. I believe that based on my research, Kylie Jenner has reached the pinnacle point of the 5 points to leadership. That mainly meaning that people follow you based on their respect for you and also what you represent. People follow Kylie because of the brand that she created and she created this empire in under 3 years starting at the age of 18.
Kylie gained her place in this world because of her families fame from the reality show Keeping up with the Kardashians. She was quiet and in her early teens. She has grown from there to create an empire based on what she loves to do, while branching away from the show that brought her into the light.
Kylie has developed over the years in her business and has faced trial and error with the things that she has done business wise. She has created different creations wit the theme of various family members and even letting them inspire a collection.
Something else that Kylie has done is by only allowing her online store to sell her product. She has done pop up stores a few times at locations in California but she wants to remain in control of her brand and product which is why only her store sells her products.
Weeks before her 21st birthday, Kylie was named in the Forbes top 100 list. In an interview in 2015 she expressed her goal to be within the Forbes 100 list one day. She didn’t expect it as quick as it happened but she was named the youngest person on the list for 2018.
Leadership skills in any business are important. When you become an entrepreneur it becomes more important that you figure out the kind of leader you are and go after the dreams that you create. Kylie did that as soon as she became a legal adult and has been conquering her dreams ever since.
She has expressed that in her future she would like to continue expanding her make up line and let it continue to grow as it already has. She loves to create her collections and hopes to create even more as the time goes on.
Having help in business shows character and so do the downfalls. When you can build yourself back up from those errors and listen to your audience is when you become a successful leader in this world.
